Summary

The Field Service Engineer/Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing advanced CNC sheet-metal processing equipment and automated manufacturing systems at customer facilities.

This position serves as the primary technical representative of the company while on-site. The Field Service Engineer/Technician works independently and in cooperation with customers, technical support, engineering, spare parts, installation, and service management to restore equipment performance, minimize customer downtime, and provide a professional customer experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, software, network, and automation-related problems.
• Perform corrective service interventions, preventive maintenance, machine evaluations, inspections, calibrations, and equipment upgrades.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams, machine layouts, technical manuals, and installation documentation.
• Use diagnostic software, electrical test equipment, precision measuring instruments, and mechanical tools to identify and correct equipment problems.
• Troubleshoot PLCs, CNC controls, industrial networks, I/O systems, servo drives, motors, encoders, sensors, safety circuits, and related control components.
• Perform mechanical alignments, adjustments, component replacement, calibration, and functional testing.
• Confirm that completed repairs and installations meet company specifications, safety requirements, and customer production needs.
• Train customer personnel in safe machine operation, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment best practices.
• Clearly explain technical findings, repair status, outstanding concerns, and recommended corrective actions to customers.
• Maintain communication with service coordination and management regarding job progress, technical concerns, parts requirements, scheduling risks, and additional support needs.
• Complete accurate and timely service reports documenting the reported problem, diagnostic work, actions performed, parts used, machine condition, test results, recommendations, and remaining open items. Submit time, travel, expense, and other administrative documentation within established deadlines.
• Identify opportunities for preventive maintenance, machine evaluations, upgrades, training, spare parts, and other services that can improve equipment reliability and customer productivity.
• Escalate unresolved or complex technical issues to technical support, engineering, or management and assist with follow-through until resolution.
• Maintain assigned tools, test equipment, computer equipment, safety equipment, and company property.
• Follow all company and customer safety policies, including lockout/tagout procedures and the use of required personal protective equipment.

Qualifications

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE:
• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability.
• Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems, control cabinets, motors, drives, sensors, relays, contactors, and safety circuits.
• Familiarity with PLCs, CNC controls, industrial computers, servo systems, I/O systems, and industrial communication networks.
• Ability to understand electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics.
• Ability to use a digital multimeter and other electrical and mechanical diagnostic equipment safely.
• General computer proficiency, including Windows-based software, Microsoft Office, email, file management, remote-support applications, and electronic service-reporting systems.
• Knowledge of Ethernet, EtherCAT, fieldbus networks, machine networking, and remote diagnostic connections is beneficial.

Education and/or Experience
• Associate degree, technical diploma, military technical training, apprenticeship, or equivalent experience in mechatronics, electronics, electrical engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
• A bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, or industrial engineering is beneficial but not required.
• Previous experience servicing CNC machinery, industrial automation, machine tools, lasers, punching systems, panel benders, press brakes, material-handling systems, or comparable manufacturing equipment is preferred.
• Candidates with strong industrial maintenance, controls, robotics, automation, aviation, military electronics, or electromechanical experience may also be considered.

Travel

Extensive overnight travel, generally Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend, extended, and international assignments based on customer requirements. You must possess or be able to obtain a valid passport. The individual must possess a valid driver's license, pass a motor vehicle record check and have the unrestricted ability to obtain rental vehicles.

Fluent in PC use as a development and communications tool. Fluent in Windows, Excel, and Word.

Mechanical

Sound mechanical aptitude is a must. The ability to use common hand tools and read mechanical drawings is required.

Physical Requirements

Candidate must have the ability to lift 75 lbs. without restrictions. Walking distances, transporting tools through the Customer's location is required. Climbing steps and ladders, working in areas offering tight access is frequently required.
