Senior Network EngineerThis senior position reports to the Assistant Director, Network Engineering, within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) at the University of Maryland, College Park, and performs in several key areas:Independently and in collaboration with others, plan, design, and implement wired and wireless network infrastructure improvements and new capabilities.Independently and in collaboration with others, design, develop, and support the wired and wireless network infrastructure.Independently and in collaboration with others, ensure that network documentation, including design documents, purpose statements, stakeholder requirements, test and support plans, as-built diagrams and specifications, as well as runbooks, are up-to-date.Present and communicate technical design and training topics to medium-sized audiences of mixed levels of technical savvy. Mentor DIT colleagues as the need comes up.Participate in the on-call rotation and provide some support outside of business hours.This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services. May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, or different shifts for extended periods.Physical Demands: Predominantly operates in an office environment, though significant periods of time may be spent in computer room and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy communications equipment. Has the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Licenses/Certifications: N/AMinimum QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Four (4) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Strong written and oral communication skills Ability to to lead presentations with small to medium sized groups Able to organize and provide direction to junior staff members A demonstrated commitment to customer service Provides leadership and helps bridge the gap between team manager and team members on technical topics Ability to effectively manage workload and delivery assignments on time Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google WorkspacesAdditional Job DetailsPreferences: N/AEducation: Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline is highly desired.Hands-on experience in a large-scale IT development and operations environment.Hands-on experience in a large-scale higher education environment.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge:Hands-on knowledge of HPE Aruba and Cisco routers and switches.Hands-on knowledge of Palo Alto FirewallsHands-on knowledge of A10 load balancersHands-on knowledge of HPE Aruba wireless access points, controllers, and conductors.Hands-on knowledge of network management and monitoring tools, such as PRTG, Nagios, and Grafana.Hands-on knowledge of and ability to work with Infoblox DDIHands-on understanding of basic software development principles and network automation.Hands-on knowledge of developing network automation code in Python and Ansible, using best practices for software development and version control.Knowledge of Server Operating Systems, including Windows, UNIX (Linux/FreeBSD).Understanding of databases and database management systems. (SQL, Oracle).Skills:Advanced-level understanding of IP routing, Ethernet switching, wireless, IP multicast routing, VOIP, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management.In-depth technical and "hands-on" knowledge of protocols and standards: Ethernet, TCP/IP, 802.1x, Wi-Fi standards (802.11 family), NAC, OSPF, BGP and BGP EVPN, IPSec, VxLAN / EVPN, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, GRE, IPAM and NTP.Hands-on experience with enterprise-level routers, switches, firewalls, and network load balancers.Strong ability to troubleshoot configuration-level and architecture-level scenarios across multiple network devices and platforms.Strong written and oral communication skills.Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspace.Abilities:Ability to develop network automation code in Python.Ability to effectively manage workload and deliver assignments on time.Scaling designs to 50,000-user enterprise networks in all networking and telecommunications areas.Ability to work under pressure and with very short timelines.Ability to manage multiple distinct tasks and priorities dailyAdditional Information: Please note that all positions within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) have an in-person component with expected time in our College Park, MD location per week.
