SUMMARY STATEMENT : Responsible for patrolling the library building and property at regular intervals to maintain the security of the library, administering library rules and policies to ensure appropriate patron conduct on library property.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Executes opening and closing procedures successfully.
• Anticipates situations which may result in inappropriate behavior.
• Completes logs and reports in a timely and thorough manner.
• Responsible for following procedures for vacating, closing, and securing library.
• Examines doors and windows to determine that they are secure.
• Patrols interior of building and exterior grounds to maintain security of library patrons, property and staff.
• Monitors patron activity in the library and on library property to maintain an appropriate environment consistent with the library’s policies.
• Provides assistance and backup to In-Charge staff as directed.
• Expels patrons who violate Rules of Conduct.
• Calls the police for assistance when needed.
• Escorts staff and patrons to their vehicles as requested.
• Empties book drops.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

• High school education or equivalent.
• Security background or training preferred.
• Knowledge of security best practices.
• Ability to follow directions and work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to be firm and respond quickly and decisively.
• Ability to deal with difficult situations.
• Ability to learn basic policies and procedures of library.
• Ability to regularly walk around and patrol the library.
• Ability to anticipate potential disruptive behavior and safety or security threats and take preventative action.
• Ability to be quickly aware of potential hazards or dangers and react appropriately.
• Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform job duties.
• Ability to communicate clearly and coherently on the CB radio.
• Ability to prepare clear, detailed, and accurately written reports.
• Ability to use Microsoft Word.
• Ability to use e-mail effectively.
• Ability to remain alert and attentive.
• Ability to use good judgment.
• Ability to utilize library’s security cameras.
• Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team.

• Ability to relate to library patrons of all ages in a positive, patient, and effective manner.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
• Ability to work a variety of hours including evenings and weekends.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Accountable for secure building and grounds.
• Accountable for security coverage until relieved by another security person.
• Accountable for security of staff and patrons.
• Accountable for continued operation of building alarm system.
• Accountable for filing Incident Reports quickly, concisely, and accurately.
• Accountable for contacting police and fire departments as needed.
• Accountable for following library rules and policies.
• Accountable for courteous, tactful, and positive library service to patrons.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in a public environment with moderate exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent walking the library building and grounds. This is physical work which requires the following physical activities: walking, standing, bending, stooping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. May have to lift up to 30 pounds of library items and furniture or fixtures on occasion.
