Sonographer

The Sonographer job performs the practice of ultrasonography and is responsible for the administration of high-frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for medical purposes. A Sonographer/Technologist performs ultrasonography procedures and related techniques producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.

Core competencies include:

• Performing all the duties of a Sonographer I.
• Providing accurate explanations and instructions to the patient and family using age-appropriate language and verifying that the patient understands and agrees to the completion of the ordered exam.
• Performing ordered exams or therapy in accordance with established imaging protocols while respecting the patients ability and comfort.
• Adhering to policies and utilizing protocols to determine that expected outcomes have been met.
• Documenting deviations from protocol and/or patient-specific issues that may impact image quality.
• Notifying the appropriate health care provider when the immediate clinical response is necessary based on procedural findings patient condition or other relevant concerns that may impact patient safety or care.
• Completing all required post-processing image display preliminary reporting and transfer for physician review in a timely manner.
• Demonstrating timely order closure charge entry and PACS QA completion.
• Routinely covering open shifts as appropriate based on level of competency.

Advanced competencies include:

• Performing all ultrasound-guided procedures including but not limited to drainages aspirations and biopsies.
• Experienced and competent in routine and complex studies.
• Complete understanding of technical standards scope of practice department and health system policies and safety and service standards.
• Complete understanding of imaging equipment image processing software instrumentation and ancillary patient care equipment.

Education certification and experience:

The position requires certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) as a sonographer ARRT(S) or RDMS or CCI certification in medical sonography or RDCS certification in cardiac sonography or RVT certification as a Vascular Technologist. BLS for Healthcare Providers. Must have completed their 6-month orientation. (Individuals with at least one year of experience can be hired directly into this role.)
