In Spring 2028 the National Gallery will launch a new public‑facing Research Centre to facilitate and showcase world‑leading research in the history, display, conservation and science of painting. This complex space will sit at the intersection of multiple valued research stakeholders – the Gallery’s own research‑active staff, its Artists‑in‑Residence, specialist users of our extensive Library & Archive collections and a research‑engaged general public attending events and consulting materials.

The Gallery is recruiting a Research Centre Manager to support the planning and daily delivery of an exceptional experience. The role-holder will provide clarity and consistency in running the multifaceted Centre, coordinating all aspects of operations, managing staff, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining facilities and administration. The manager will also think creatively with Gallery colleagues about the Centre’s different spaces.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver daily operations of the Research Centre.
• Coordinate all operational aspects and ensure smooth functioning.
• Manage staff and support them in day‑to‑day tasks.
• Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.
• Maintain facilities and handle administrative duties.
• Engage in strategic planning for the Centre alongside Gallery colleagues.

• Experience in a comparable multifaceted role.
• Strong leadership and organisational skills.
• Excellent communication and innovative problem‑solving abilities.
• Capability to manage day‑to‑day operations and long‑term strategic planning.
