Description
The Division of Medical Genetics, Genomics and Metabolism at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University is seeking a full-time Board Certified/Board Eligible Clinical Geneticist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to join our growing, diverse, and multidisciplinary team. Candidates must possess or be eligible for New York State medical licensure.
Responsibilities and Requirements :
The successful candidate will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient clinical genetics services to a diverse pediatric and adult patient population. Clinical responsibilities will include the evaluation, diagnosis, counseling, and longitudinal management of patients with suspected or confirmed genetic disorders, including congenital anomalies, neurodevelopmental disorders, hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes, metabolic disorders, and other rare diseases.
The position includes participation in inpatient consultations at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and affiliated clinical facilities, as well as collaboration with pediatric and adult subspecialists across Stony Brook Medicine. The faculty member will work closely with genetic counselors, advanced practice providers, metabolic dietitians, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, and other members of the multidisciplinary genetics team.
The Division currently consists of two clinical geneticists, one nurse practitioner, five genetic counselors, one metabolic dietitian, and two administrative support staff. The successful candidate will join an established and collaborative clinical program with substantial opportunities to help define its next phase of development.
The Division is actively expanding the scope and reach of its clinical programs. Strategic priorities include growth in gene therapy and enzyme replacement therapy, as well as the development and expansion of dedicated programs in cardiogenetics, cancer genetics, and neurogenetics. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to program development, establish multidisciplinary clinical pathways, build partnerships across pediatric and adult specialties, participate in therapeutic implementation and longitudinal treatment programs, and develop an area of clinical focus aligned with the candidate’s expertise and interests.
Board certification or board eligibility in Clinical Genetics and Genomics through the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics is required. Certification or eligibility in Clinical Biochemical Genetics is desirable but is not required. Candidates with expertise in biochemical genetics may participate in the diagnosis and management of inborn errors of metabolism, enzyme replacement therapy programs, emerging molecular and gene-based therapies, newborn screening follow-up, and the longitudinal care of pediatric and adult patients with metabolic disease.
Candidates with additional certification, training, or experience in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics, or molecular diagnostic laboratory medicine are particularly encouraged to apply. Stony Brook Medicine is developing its molecular diagnostic capabilities, and this position offers an opportunity for qualified candidates to participate in the establishment and growth of a clinical molecular genetics laboratory. Depending on the candidate’s background and interests, opportunities may include assay development and validation, test implementation, genomic data interpretation, laboratory quality initiatives, clinical-laboratory integration, and future laboratory leadership. Prior laboratory directorship experience is not required.
As an academic institution, this position requires a significant commitment to teaching across the undergraduate and graduate medical education spectrum. Educational responsibilities may include teaching medical students, residents, fellows, genetic counseling trainees, and other healthcare professionals. Participation in resident and fellow education, interdisciplinary conferences, and departmental educational activities is expected.
Interest in clinical research, translational research, scholarship, quality improvement, and program development is strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop an academic portfolio aligned with their clinical, educational, laboratory, or research interests. Opportunities exist to participate in clinical trials, natural-history studies, therapeutic registries, investigator-initiated research, and other scholarly activities related to rare disease and genomic medicine.
