Position Summary
The mandate for the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management is to promote amongst the University community, including staff, faculty and students, a culture that encourages an academic, learning, and working environment that is respectful of all members of the University community, free of harassment, discrimination and sexual violence, and maximizes the potential for academic achievement and promotes a positive, engaging work environment.
The Equity Case Work and Support Coordinator will be a resource to those seeking support for dispute resolution on matters including but not limited to harassment & discrimination (including personal harassment) and human rights, employing the principles of impartiality and independence. The Equity Case Work and Support Coordinator is accountable for triaging requests received by the Office and providing support and resolution for complaints, along with providing confidential and independent advice and support to faculty, staff, and students and others who may be affected in the course of resolving complaints with a focus on supporting people from marginalized backgrounds.
Working closely with other support departments/services including Student Services, The Wellness Centres, Safety, Health, Environmental and Risk Management and Human Resources, the Equity Case Work and Support Coordinator will develop and maintain strong and constructive working relationships with all constituent groups thereby fostering a supportive and positive environment for the entire University community. This is achieved through the fostering of positive working relationships with all employee and student groups, staff and senior administration to raise awareness and gain support for the mandate of the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management.
In an effort to promote a working and learning environment free of harassment, discrimination, bullying and violence this position is responsible for creating, maintaining and delivering materials to proactively educate the University community on harassment, discrimination, sexual violence, human rights, conflict management best practices, along with project and committee work.
Additionally, this position requires an ability to resolve issues related to interpersonal conflicts, identify systemic barriers that contribute to conflict in a learning and working environment, liaison and collaborate with partners to understand and resolve institutional issues and promote a culture of emotional health and inclusion. This position has a university-wide mandate and the successful incumbent provides support and services in a multi-campus environment, requiring regular interaction, communication and collaboration with staff and stakeholders at the Waterloo and Kitchener Campuses as well as the Brantford Campus and Toronto office.
This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus. The incumbent provides subject matter expertise to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, the Toronto office and external partners. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.
Accountabilities
- Support resolution processes and systems navigation
- Point of contact for marginalized students, staff and faculty who have experienced oppression- based harm and are in need of supports, coaching, resources and/or accountability processes.
- Provide support and advocacy to marginalized students, staff and faculty who are involved in a complaints process.
- Utilize intersectional, anti-oppressive and trauma-informed approaches to support systems navigation and create a plan of action to address concerns and complaints.
- Receive and investigate complaints of unfair processes or the mishandling of policies or procedures.
- Provide information on internal and external options for reporting and resolution of complaints.
- Provide conflict coaching and mentorship to students, staff, and faculty to help respond to equity-based conflicts.
- Provide case management, safety planning, risk assessment and accommodation support.
- Co-coordinate the restorative justice Community of Practice strategic plan, program development and project evaluation.
- Engage in facilitating restorative justice processes.
- Remain current with pertinent ethical requirements and research relevant to responding to concerns and complaints from an equity lens.
- Act as contact and systems navigator for marginalized respondents engaging with the gendered and sexual violence policy.
- Provide referral information and warm transfers to other supports and services.
- Collaborate with other internal portfolios and external partners to coordinate support and resolution efforts.
- Education and programming
- Plan and coordinate educational opportunities with a particular focus on the prevention of harassment and discrimination, transformation and resolution of conflict, de-escalation, restoration after conflict and harm, understanding of human rights and responsibilities and responding to lateral violence.
- Provide educational support concerning equity-focused conflict and human rights education in teaching and learning (example: abolition pedagogy, restorative justice in the classroom, difficult conversations, accommodations on protected grounds, etc.).
- Provide psycho-educational support as part of conflict and/or harm response strategies.
- Outreach and awareness
- Manage social media accounts for community engagement and outreach.
- Assist in raising awareness of supports, services available, including rights and responsibilities available to students, staff, and faculty.
- Build and cultivate relationships with internal and external partners and service providers.
- Research and resource development
- Assist with knowledge mobilization of wise practices, tools, information about rights and responsibilities.
- Act as central repository for gathering and reporting statistical incidents of equity-based harms.
- Other / systemic change
- Identify gaps in existing University policies and processes related to reporting and responding to experiences of oppression and harm.
- Collaborate with equity portfolios in the University to coordinate efforts to achieve goals of the portfolio.
Qualifications
- University degree in a relevant field
- Identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) and has extensive experience supporting and advocating for people from marginalized backgrounds.
- Demonstrated highly effective dispute resolution skills
- Strong communication, decision making skills and sound judgement
- Experience facilitating and organizing committees and/or communities of practice.
- Process analysis and documentation experience
- Mediation and facilitation experience
- Excellent organization and administrative skills

- Human rights and related legislation knowledge

Hours of Work: This is a full-time, continuing position. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
This role offers limited flexibility regarding flexible work arrangements. Please see Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy) for more information. All arrangement must be approved by the direct manager. On occasion, this schedule may need to be adjusted to meet operational requirements.
Compensation:
Level: EX-G
Salary: Hiring salary range posted: $73,999 - $92,499 annually.
Broad salary ranges include a hiring range ($73,999 - $83,249 of range midpoint), a target range ($84,174.09 - $101,749 of range midpoint), and a premium range ($102,673.89 - $110,999 of range midpoint).
