Assistant Nurse Manager

The Assistant Nurse Manager for the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) leads and manages direct care nursing functions of the CSU team to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Efforts will focus on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical and education programs of clinical departments. Key Areas Of Responsibilities Human Resources Management Hiring: Hires or assists in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations. Staff Development: Develop and manage the talents, strengths, and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by the Nurse Manager. Assists in matters of promotion, transfers, and disciplinary action, as directed by the Nurse Manager. Coaches staff to participate in team decision‑making and actively seeks participation from assigned staff on decision‑making and customer service improvement activities. Provides staff incentives/rewards for contribution towards achievement of service excellence. Performance Management: Completes staff evaluations for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification. Assures staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures, and regulations. Leave Management: Reviews attendance data, recognizes trends and takes appropriate follow‑up with staff. Knowledgeable of University of Iowa policies and Federal laws regarding leave and accommodation processes. Employee and Labor Relations: Understands and applies appropriately the provisions in the union contracts. Creates an atmosphere that supports recruitment and retention of qualified staff. Other: Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations. Financial Management Actively helps manage operating expenses for the unit. Reviews financial reports and provides insights on budget variances. Recommends budget ideas, resources, and cost containment strategies. Participates in division‑wide budget preparation, including calculation of projected costs and expenses. Monitors departmental account expenditures, identifies irregularities, and recommends corrective action. Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Patient Satisfaction Collaborates with nurse leaders to identify quality management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement and implements standards and quality plans. Incorporates the principles of Service Excellence to ensure positive patient/customer relations. Identifies inefficiencies in current practice and develops means to enhance the process. Promotes a workplace of choice, motivating employees to work at optimal efficiency. Patient Care/Services Delivery Supervises care delivery and assists in coordinating patient care teams on the unit. Serves as a resource for patient care problems and provides patient care as needed. Assists the Nurse Manager in developing flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to ensure optimal patient care. Planning And Goal Management Collaborates with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans. Uses customer feedback in planning and service provision. Communication/Collaboration Communicates with physicians, staff, and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations. Communicates with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues. Utilizes human resource data and budgetary information to formulate recommendations to the Nurse Manager and/or directors. Education Programs Provides evaluative feedback to staff members and health care students, working with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences. Coaches the staff in implementing standards of care and professional development. Promotes staff specialty and clinical certifications and adherence to regulatory bodies. Educates and mentors staff in the management of complex patient care issues. Research Administration Supports unit evidence‑based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence‑based practices in nursing care. Education Requirements Baccalaureate in Nursing is required. Experience Requirements 1+ years of nursing experience with demonstrated leadership skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with computer software applications such as Microsoft programs. Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail, and thoroughness. Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments and staff. Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education. Demonstrated skill in leadership/management and experience in clinical practice required. Strong clinical assessment skills. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and problem‑solving skills. Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification as soon as eligible within two years of start date. Certification/Licensure Requirements Current license to practice nursing in Iowa. Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification as soon as eligible. Desired Qualifications Master’s Degree (MSN, MBA or MHA) preferred. 3+ years of nursing experience in behavioral health. Experience with a large academic medical center. Experience in a union environment. Member/involvement with professional organizations.
