Position Title: Campus Safety Officer Position Control Number: S04360 Type of Position: Staff Position Status: Full-time Campus: Western University Campus-Pomona, CA Position Location: California Department: 5702-Campus Security Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Safety, the Campus Safety Officer performs a wide variety of campus security and public services to ensure the safety of persons, protect property of various kinds, maintain order and enforce the rules and regulations governing students, faculty, and staff with superior customer service and integrity. This is a non‑sworn, unarmed position. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Exercise sound judgment. Recognize illegal, unsafe and contraband substances or weapons. Prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence. Gather, collect and preserve evidence. Operate a vehicle, observing legal and defensive driving practices. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work effectively with a diverse population. Reason effectively during emergency situations and adopt an effective course of action. Utilize effective verbal de‑escalation techniques to defuse potentially volatile or disruptive situations involving students, employees, visitors, or members of the public. Learn Campus Disaster Plan and explain procedures to others. Perform multiple tasks in a calm, effective and efficient manner. Perform tasks that require physical exertion, stamina, flexibility, and standing or walking for long periods of time. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Demonstrate a commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism. Required Qualifications Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school or GED and one year experience in security and/or in the law‑enforcement field. Must satisfactorily pass a background investigation. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a clean driving record. Preferred Qualifications Possession of a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Guard Certification. Key Responsibilities Provide mobile security patrol on campus by foot, bicycle, motorized cart, or vehicle. Assist with public services, including protection of campus buildings and property and guarding against fire, intrusion, theft, and vandalism. Remain attentive to potential safety and security risks such as unsecured doors, insufficient lighting, tripping hazards, evidence of criminal activity, graffiti, and burglaries. Maintain fixed security assignments at entry points and visible outdoor locations. Provide information and directions to students and visitors. Ensure that no unauthorized visitors enter buildings and that all authorized visitors sign in and out on the check‑in sheets. Notify supervisors of suspected illegal or suspicious activity. Observe and report unsafe conditions and/or occurrences. Make written and oral reports describing hazardous conditions affecting the campus community. Prepare a Daily Field Activity report of security assignments and incidents. Write non‑police incident reports or complaints from students, visitors, faculty, and staff. Check the physical security of buildings (doors, windows, alarms) and conduct routine rounds to ensure they remain secure. Escort personnel into buildings after hours or when lacking keys, after verifying authenticity of requests. Take custody of found, lost, or abandoned property and attempt to locate owners to return the property. Package and store any unreturned property properly. Serve in the Security Operations Center monitoring surveillance cameras and dispatching personnel. Assist with parking control by issuing permits or enforcing violations. Assist special events such as commencement. Participate in meetings, take notes, and follow up on actions. Physical Demands Essential functions require lifting and a high level of physical ability and mobility. Responsibilities include walking, standing, sitting, running for prolonged periods, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, lifting light to moderate weights frequently and occasionally lifting heavier weights. Operator duties involve vehicles, controlling patrol equipment and a two‑way radio. Verbal communication is essential. Reasonable accommodations may be available for individuals with disabilities. Work Environment The role operates in dynamic and reactive emergency settings, including natural and human‑made disasters, as well as routine peacekeeping situations. Employees may be regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and, on occasion, to airborne particles, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and bodily fluids. Additional hazards may include extreme temperatures, electrical shock, radiation exposure, and vibration. The role may involve working in potentially hostile environments and requires extensive public interaction. Noise levels are usually mild to moderate. Incumbents work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.
