No CDL is required to apply for the position. Valid ClassA,B or C Driver’s License required to apply; must have held an unrestricted driver’s license for three or more years prior to application date; required to obtain a CDL permit before being hired into the bus manager training program. Bus Managers receive American Heart Association certification during the training program and must complete the required bi‑annual training to maintain it (provided by GCPS). Education Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience Qualifications: Must successfully complete the Bus Manager training program provided by Gwinnett County Public Schools. Skills Qualifications: Ability to communicate in the English language both orally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills; ability to take directions; a positive attitude; ability to interact positively, gain respect of, and maintain effective control over student passengers to ensure behavior is not distracting to safe driving; ability to operate a school bus transporting students safely, properly, and courteously; ability to work harmoniously with children and others; ability to work well as part of a team. Responsibilities Perform all activities required to safely operate a school bus transporting students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and school‑related events. Ensure the safe, timely, and dependable transportation of students and authorized personnel. Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance; work hours may vary during the school year. Operate the school bus in strict compliance with federal, state, and local laws, GCPS policies, and protocols. Participate in 70 to 90 hours of initial training and 20 to 40 hours of professional development annually. Successfully complete annual qualification health physical, driving skills exam, and random drug and alcohol tests. Adhere to GCPS Transportation Handbook regulations. Operate bus free from traffic violations or citations. Operate bus free from preventable accidents. Ensure students are loaded, properly secured, and unloaded with extreme attentiveness. Use extreme concentration during all routes. Monitor surrounding traffic for safety. Count each student from stop to bus or vice versa, maintaining control. Ensure each student is seated appropriately. Secure all equipment in the seating compartment. Maintain a safe environment by enforcing rules, managing behavior, and reporting misbehavior. Monitor student behavior and protect against inappropriate actions. Use behavior management to prevent discipline issues and intervene early. Maintain confidentiality regarding student management issues. Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and maintain bus cleanliness. Log physical inspections before and after routes. Deliver bus to maintenance facility as directed. Maintain internal and external cleanliness for safety and appearance. Attend staff meetings, complete development training, and participate in workshops. Keep up‑to‑date on relevant technology. Prepare reports (field trip, incident, inspection, misbehavior, mileage, student counts, routing). Assist school personnel with data collection related to student management. Communicate timely, accurately, and professionally. Use radio protocol with dispatchers. Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and staff regarding services and behavior. Collaborate with administrators. Act professionally as a district ambassador. Provide safety and emergency training to students. Introduce proper bus operation during first week of school. Conduct monthly emergency training. Simulate and practice evacuation twice a year. Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor or other administrator. Physical Demands Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Occasional use of hands, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must lift or move more than 100 pounds in emergencies. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus. Exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
