Manager Nuclear Medicine & PET CT

POSITION SUMMARY :

Under the general supervision of the Director of Radiology Operations, the Manager of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging provides technical, operational and administrative leadership to the Division of Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT, Molecular Imaging and Theranostics, through interactions with support and technical staff, Radiologists, external departments and others as necessary.  Primary duty is to manage all aspects of the day-to-day molecular imaging operations for the BMC campus.  Develops and implements policies and procedures in conjunction with the System Senior Director of Radiology, the Director of Operations, the Section Chief of Molecular Imaging and Department of Radiation and Medical Physics.  The Manager of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging is responsible for approximately 15 FTE’s and operating budgets of approximately $ 5.5 million.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of daily activities relating to the technical, administrative and operational aspects of the Molecular Imaging Division in accordance with the goals and directives of the System Sr. Director, Director of Operations, Section Chief of Molecular Imaging and Chairman of Radiology.  Ensures a high quality, efficient, safe, patient focused and properly functioning Molecular Imaging Division.
  • Responsible for creating business plans, feasibility and ROI reports for Molecular Imaging
  • Oversees the daily operation of radiopharmaceutical compounding areas including Technetium-99m and Cardiogen Rubidium-82 generators.
  • Oversees the process of safe handling and storage of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals including schedule II and adjunct pharmaceuticals which includes the procurement, identification, calibration, preparation, quality control, dose calculation, dispensing documentation, administration and disposal of such material. 
  • Oversees the daily operations of General Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT, Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac stress laboratories, including but not limited to drug reconciliation and equipment.
  • Responsible for and oversees Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging patient/subject scheduling.
  • Ensures all related duties associated with charging and code capture of diagnostic and theranostics procedures are performed within hospital requirements. Understands and implements all applicable managed care criteria and requirements for reimbursement and billing parameters.
  • Ensures proper staffing and allocates technologists and other staff to section areas as necessary and appropriate for patient care, budget, staffing and department and hospital needs. 
  • Manages employees for all assigned shifts.  Oversees that employees are performing duties and following policies and procedures as necessary. 
  • Responsible for monitoring and changing the workflow as needed to ensure operational efficiency and staff productivity. 
  • Provides guidance and technical assistance to employees and assigns progressively challenging projects.
  • Initiates and recommends policies and procedures as necessary. 
  • Maintains clinical and research protocols and in collaboration with the Section Chief of Molecular Imaging assists in making changes when required.  Assists in clinical and research protocol development and initiatives.
  • Responsible for creating molecular imaging research budgets for materials, personnel and third-party fees involved in validating imaging biomarkers, radiotherapeutic pharmaceuticals, imaging equipment and techniques for human subjects and small animals. 
  • Responsible for research equipment, isotope and radiopharmacy compliance integrity i.e. Research drug accountability and Quality Assurance (log), recordkeeping and record retention.
  • Maintaining ICANL (IAC) accreditation, ACRIN and Clinical Trials Network research certification of molecular imaging equipment and radiopharmacy.
  • Responsible for the training and orientation of personnel to accomplish the department and hospital mission of service and support.  Provides education and training of new staff and technologists in the Molecular Imaging department.
  • Responsible for creating, editing and maintaining competencies as they pertain to Molecular Imaging staff.
  • Responsible for ensuring that direct reports are in compliance with required licensure, certifications, registrations and required hospital competencies such as but not limited to annual safety and infection control and TB testing.
  • Supports the departmental goal of effective cooperation and communication with staff, peers, members and other hospital departments to ensure that information is shared for effective and efficient operations.
  • Coordinates monthly staff meetings.  Records minutes, outcomes and attendance.  Seeks staff input in identifying and solving problems/issues within the department. 
  • Interviews and makes hiring decisions.  Works closely with Human Resources and Director of Radiology Operations to select the highest quality candidate.
  • Evaluates staffing options to include full and part time as well as per diem staff.
  • Monitors performance and compliance with the departmental procedures and evaluates staff in annual performance appraisals.
  • Enforces departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and work rules, including but not limited to policies regarding hours of work, absenteeism and tardiness. Conducts investigatory meetings and is responsible for the discipline of staff as needed.  Terminates employees through interaction with Director of Radiology Operations and Human Resources.  Hears Step 1 grievances. 
  • Maintains documentation of hours worked, leaves and vacation/sick time for the assigned staff. Responsible for entering and tracking payroll hours.  Ensures overtime is minimized while patient care and staffing distribution is maximized.   
  • Ensures all call-ins are timely, qualitative, complete and appropriate.  Ensures techs can scan autonomously on call.
  • Exhibits innovation in planning improvements/new programs and problem solving in areas of responsibility.  Makes adjustments and modifications to employees’ schedules and templates for scheduled patients as necessary, based on changes in volume and the needs of the Division, patients and budget concerns. 
  • Responsible for Nuclear Medicine annual budget and supply management.  Will be responsible for submitting both operational (salary and non-salary) and capital budgets on a yearly basis to the Director of Radiology Operations.  Prepares monthly budget and productivity variance reports, defining corrective action where appropriate.  Contributes to the goals of optimization of resources and revenue enhancement.
  • Participates in strategic planning for Molecular Imaging.  Will be involved in the acquisition of capital equipment.  Will be responsible for researching equipment, obtaining information and quotes, organizing site visits or onsite trials and making recommendations on potential investments. 
  • Ensures adequate inventory of supplies appropriate for the volume of testing.  Minimizes overstocking of supplies and keeps inventory stock to a minimum. 
  • Provides and ensures use of all required personal protective safety equipment.  Promotes a safe environment for all personnel. 
  • Maintains equipment and physical space through interaction with the Director of Radiology Operations and department service vendors to maximize equipment up time, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital. Coordinates service calls, internal work orders and other equipment repair and maintenance when necessary.
  • Responsible for presenting monthly statistical reports based on volume, access, turnaround time, unread studies and others as appropriate.
  • Maintains a clean and up to date RIS/PACS and NMIS database.
  • In conjunction with the department’s Radiation/Medical Physics, Section Chief of Molecular Imaging and Director of Radiology Operations, assists in the development of and maintains the quality assurance/control programs to ensure the optimal performance and stability of all equipment and instrumentation in the Molecular Imaging Division, that best practices and standards are adhered to and that the section is operating at the safest level possible.  Ensures continuous quality improvement in services.  Keeps up with all Molecular Imaging compliance notifications and updates and makes the appropriate changes to the QA/QC program
  • Ensures continuous compliance to the standards set forth by BMC, State of Massachusetts, ICANL, ICACTL, NRC, and any other regulatory agencies as they relate to Molecular Imaging Division practices. 
  • Oversees the ICANL and ICACTL accreditation and inspection process. 
  • Ensures maintenance of compliance logs for equipment and QA measures and attends compliance rounds when requested.
  • Maintains a working relationship with the Departments of Pharmacy and Laboratory Medicine as needed to ensure best practices are utilized for studies involving specific lab or pharmacy related duties.
  • Attends meetings as necessary related to any operational issues involving Molecular Imaging.
  • Involved in various committees within the Radiology Department as needed.
  • Maintains current state licensure, and/or ARRT and CNMT credentials.  Keeps skill level up to date by continuing education and attending management/technical workshops as they become available.  Maintains continuing education credits
  • Resolves patient scheduling issues by working with appropriate providers and staff
  • Handles patient complaints, performs service recovery and ensures customer satisfaction at all times.  Establishes and maintains customer service standards to ensure all customers are provided with prompt and complete service
  • Handles telephone calls and other requests for services professionally and appropriately at all times.
  • Conforms to hospital standard of conduct at all times, while providing the best possible patient care, customer service and pride and professionalism of self and work. 
  • Demonstrates leadership and reliability in all areas of divisional operations. 
  • Works closely with managers in all modalities to give feedback and improve individual department budgets, patient care and technologists’ training and initiatives. 
  • Demonstrates a willingness to accept instruction, guidance and/or constructive criticism from staff, peers, Section Chief of Molecular Imaging or Director of Radiology Operations. 
  • Consistently demonstrates tact, courtesy and a positive attitude in all aspects of communication and job.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Radiology Operations, is responsible for the marketing of Molecular Imaging. 
  • Works as required by Director and is available 24 hours and/or on call as a function of job. 
  • When necessary for operational needs, performs appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure. Follows requisition in terms of providing proper study for patients. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and calls or asks proper persons for more information as necessary to perform the proper study.
  • When necessary for operational needs, sets up equipment as necessary and uses proper imaging and dose preparation techniques. Adjust imaging parameters when necessary to improve quality of study. Works through Radiologist’s requirements to provide appropriate images and provides additional views and variations of techniques as requested.
  • When necessary for operational needs, completes procedures in timely fashion while providing quality images for Radiology and outside departments. Completes work by the end of the shift or communicates with coworkers about work needing completion.
  • Ensures HIPAA compliance at all times and understands that all patient information is accessed on a need-to-know basis.   Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and/or any inappropriate behavior.
  • Follows all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures as required.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the department and hospital’s goals and mission.
  • Understands and models Boston Medical Center’s behavioral standards and VSSC goals.
  • Commits to adhering to the Society of Nuclear Medicine’s Code of Ethics.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • At a minimum, an Associates degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology is required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. At least 5 years as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. Two to three years supervisory experience preferred. Master’s degree preferred

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter “N/A”):

More than 5 years of experience, knowledge and understanding of business hospital-based or academic medical center setting , with a focus on Radiology, Imaging Services, and/or Ambulatory Operations

  • Operational and financial management — including budgeting, forecasting, and performance analytics for physician practices.

  • Excellent analytical skills, including ability to review quantitative and qualitative data and reach sound, strategic conclusions

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and embrace new challenges

  • Strategic planning and business development — such as evaluating new services and developing partnerships.

  • Human resources management , including staffing models, including performance improvement

  • Regulatory compliance (e.g., Joint Commission, DPH, CMS, NRC) and quality and risk management integration .

  • Familiarity with Epic Radiant , Epic Cupid, PACS/RIS , and financial data reporting tools preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED (If none, please enter “N/A”):

  • Current Massachusetts State license as a Radiologic Technologist in Nuclear Medicine, ARRT (N) and/or NMTCB certification and all applicable Radiology education requirements.  Current NMTCB certification in Cardiac and/or, PET, CT and/or ARRT (CT) preferred.

  • BLS/CPR Certification required.

  • NIH Human Subjects Protection in Research Certification (may be obtained after 90 days).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs) (If none, please enter “N/A”):

  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT, Diagnostic CT, Theranostics, and Radiopharmacy and the operation and maintenance of equipment generally acquired through the completion of training either in an ARRT or CNMT approved formal educational program.  Equipment includes but not limited to:  gamma cameras with sealed sources of radioactive material for transmission imaging with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), SPECT/CT, positron emission tomography (PET/CT), and diagnostic CT.

  • Knowledge and principles of the following non-imaging instrumentation: dose calibrators, survey instrumentation for exposure and contamination, probe and well instrumentation, and other applicable patient care equipment as authorized by institutional policies.

  • Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, physiology and medical terminology with the analytical skills to effectively utilize knowledge towards imaging processes, techniques and procedures.

  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft programs (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint) and web browsers.  Working knowledge of Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) (Epic preferred).

  • Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.

  • Must present a positive, team-oriented attitude and a professional appearance.

  • Ability to adhere to safety standards set forth by the Radiology Department, BMC and other regulatory agencies.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students and to interact with other staff technologists.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff, ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; to set priorities and solve problems; to respond quickly to emergency requests.

Compensation Range:

$89,500.00- $130,000.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
