The smallest of the four Duke Health hospitals at 123 beds, it offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including 24‑hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women’s services, and surgical specialties. Job Summary Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital is seeking an experienced and collaborative Director of Plant Operations to lead all aspects of facilities management, engineering operations, utilities, construction projects, and regulatory compliance for our hospital campus and affiliated locations. As a member of the hospital leadership team, the Director of Plant Operations serves as the senior facilities leader for Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital, providing strategic oversight of plant operations, facilities management, construction, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure planning while partnering with Duke University Health System leaders to support operational excellence and future growth. This position plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, reliable, and patient‑centered environment while supporting the hospital’s strategic goals and growth. The Director will work closely with local leaders and partners across Duke Health to maintain facility excellence, enhance operational performance, and support an exceptional patient and staff experience. The position will report to the Senior Director, Duke Health Facilities. What You’ll Do Lead day‑to‑day operations for Plant Operations, Facilities Management, Utilities, and Maintenance Services. Ensure the hospital’s physical environment remains safe, reliable, compliant, and well‑maintained. Oversee critical building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, fire alarm, and building automation systems. Direct preventive and corrective maintenance programs and ensure the integrity of the CMMS program. Lead construction, renovation, and infrastructure improvement projects from planning through completion. Manage operating budgets, capital projects, vendor partnerships, and service contracts. Partner with hospital leadership to identify facility needs and develop solutions that support patient care and operational efficiency. Maintain compliance with Joint Commission standards, Life Safety requirements, OSHA regulations, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Lead survey readiness efforts and coordinate responses to inspections, audits, and accreditation visits. Recruit, develop, and lead a team of skilled trades and facilities professionals while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and customer service. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities N/A Level Characteristics Supervises a large group of skilled trades personnel involved in the building, property management, renovation, and maintenance of hospital properties, including interviewing and making recommendations in the hiring of all engineering employees, and resolves disciplinary matters concerning these employees. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in engineering, facilities management, business management, or a related field. Experience Seven years of facilities, engineering, plant operations, or related experience, with five years of progressive leadership experience managing teams and operational programs. Preferred Qualifications Healthcare facilities management experience. CHFM certification or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire. Experience with CMMS platforms and building automation systems. Experience managing facility infrastructure, maintenance programs, construction projects, and regulatory compliance initiatives. Strong communication and relationship‑building skills with the ability to work effectively with hospital leadership, physicians, staff, contractors, and external agencies.
