Physician (Sleep Medicine)

Summary The Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center is recruiting one Physician—Sleep Medicine. The incumbent will be a member of the Medical Service and will participate in patient care, teaching, and administrative activities as assigned. He or she will serve as an independent physician provider and offer medical care across all aspects of patient care, including inpatient and outpatient settings. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) stated in the job announcement. Basic Requirements United States citizenship (non‑citizens may be considered only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy). Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion. Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training in an accredited core specialty leading to eligibility for board certification, or one of the following alternatives: One year of approved post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice under a full license. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States with duties related to the position. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) if otherwise eligible. PRPs must hold a full, unrestricted license and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will have a restricted scope of practice under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Board eligible or certified in Sleep Medicine. Preferred: Experience in VA training or employment. Physical requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019; meet physical standards including a physical examination prior to placement; ability to lift 15‑44 pounds, push, reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands, walk, stand, and kneel for periods of 3‑5 hours. Duties Work as an independent physician provider in the Pulmonary/Critical Care/Sleep Section within the Medicine Service line. Provide medical care in the spectrum of board eligible or board certified expertise in outpatient and, if desired, inpatient settings. Engage in teaching, research, quality improvement, and administrative activities of the Division as assigned. Provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in outpatient sleep and/or pulmonary clinics. Participate in pulmonary consults and Intensive Care Unit duties if desired. Triage and evaluate consultations for inpatient and outpatient pulmonary and sleep specialty. Obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, order and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing, and plan and prescribe treatment. Interpret sleep studies, including Polysomnography, home sleep tests, PAP titrations, MSLT, and other sleep testing modalities. Teach in‑training sleep fellows and staff the trainee clinic. Coordinate medical management and care within discipline with primary care providers and other services in a multidisciplinary health care delivery system. Provide on‑call services for the section as assigned and share after‑hour call responsibilities in rotation. Participate in monitoring the quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care at the section and facility levels. Perform administrative tasks including peer reviews, ongoing professional practice evaluations (OPPE), and special projects that fulfill or enhance the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Participate in educational programs for section personnel and the medical staff. Attend required team meetings and meetings of the Pulmonary/Critical Care Section. Be eligible for a University of Colorado – Anschutz faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine to work with trainees. Compensation and Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases. Paid time off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME). Retirement: Traditional federal pension after 5 years vesting and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
