Surgical Physician Assistant - CV Surgery (Medical Center)

At Houston Methodist, the Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) functions as an advanced practice practitioner maintaining and promoting the health of the patient requiring care, practicing medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician. This position provides diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical and preventative care, assisting physicians in the global management of patient care in all peri-operative settings. The surgical PA works in both inpatient and outpatient settings, may take call as required, and performs the majority of work in the operating room. The PA examines, diagnoses, and decides treatment for patients, including analyzing x‑rays and lab results, writing prescriptions, taking histories, and ordering therapy, in accordance with Texas Board policies and Houston Methodist procedures. People Essential Functions Demonstrates leadership as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and patient advocate. Participates in rounding independently or with physicians/surgeons and attends interdisciplinary rounds. Collaborates to foster healthy relationships in the work environment; acts as a role model and coaches staff in effective communication. May serve as first call for hospital staff and preceptor for PA students and medical residents. Communicates organizational information and aspects of administrative and clinical practice respectfully. Advocates for a balanced workload, promotes positive behaviors, and facilitates teamwork. Collaborates with interprofessional health‑care team members to manage/coordinate patient care and advocates on patients’ and families’ behalf to resolve clinical and ethical concerns. Service Essential Functions Coordinates timely patient care between providers and ancillary clinicians under a physician license, focusing on defined outcomes for patient populations. Collaborates with interprofessional team members to manage/coordinate patient care and provides first‑assist or second‑assist surgical services as needed. Responds and is available promptly to patient questions/issues triaged by clinical staff and provides assistance for emergencies. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Performs independent or delegated functions under physician license, including diagnosis, prescriptive authority, and treatment per practice guidelines, protocols, or standing orders. Reviews medications and test reports, responds to critical results, and advises on corrective action. Conducts comprehensive health assessments, develops care plans, initiates interventions, and evaluates outcomes for defined patient populations. Assists the interprofessional team in developing and implementing patient‑safety protocols and leads improvements in patient‑safety processes. Finance Essential Functions Performs accurate and timely documentation in medical records, including diagnosis and CPT coding. Implements department strategies to achieve financial targets and mentors others through efficient documentation to reduce length of stay and optimize resource use. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identifies and implements innovative solutions to improve patient care or department operations, leading or participating in projects or committees. Provides education on professional activities such as research, presentations, and publications and coaches staff to grow in knowledge and skills. Education Bachelor’s degree. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Work Experience One year of surgical experience. Licenses and Certifications - Required State licensure as a Physician Assistant (PA) AND Physician Assistant‑Certified (PA‑C) (NCCPA) AND DEA Narcotics License (DEA) AND BLS Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) AND ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies through ongoing assessments and evaluations. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English. Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family, and co‑workers with a customer‑service focus. Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously.
