Physician (Gastroenterology)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are those approved by ACGME or AOA for the year the program was completed. OR one year of post medical school training (internship or first year of residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice in the United States. OR non-U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States performing duties related to the position. Residents in accredited training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement if the applicant’s record warrants it. The duties include but are not limited to: The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVACHS) is seeking a full‑time physician for our Gastroenterology Division. Commitment to excellence in patient care and an interest in teaching are essential. A record of contribution to scientific literature is preferred and willingness to participate in clinical trials is desired. Division members participate in outpatient clinic services including fellows, clinic, and inpatient consult service. Hospitalist service reduces inpatient demands on subspecialty divisions. Tucson VA is a tertiary care facility offering a full range of clinical services including complex coronary angioplasty, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, structural heart procedures, and Mohs surgery. It has been a flagship quality provider within the VA and won the 2012 Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award. We are in a growth area for the VA. Consequently, the VA is open to major capital investment in our facility. SAVACHS is the principal teaching affiliate of the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine – Nursing – and Pharmacy. Candidates must be eligible for a facility appointment with the University of Arizona commensurate with clinical experience and academic achievement to facilitate teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows. Proficiency in standard endoscopy procedures is expected. Opportunity to perform advanced endoscopy procedures if fits candidate’s interest and expertise. Excellent facilities and equipment are in place. GI service provides some remote care through telehealth and video visits. Medical subspecialists are not required to travel to affiliated clinics. Numerous opportunities for clinical research and collaboration in research projects exist. Preference for candidates board certified or recently board eligible in gastroenterology. A track record of success in education and/or research will be noted. The incumbent is expected to actively participate in quality improvement activities and comply with agency, facility, and department regulations. The incumbent will support the supervision and training of fellows, residents, and medical students from University of Arizona College of Medicine rotating through the GI Division. A candidate must maintain American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification. Commitment to compliance with VA and SAVAHCS regulatory requirements is expected.
