Medical Technologist II, Point of Care

Position Summary Under the general direction of the Medical Director of POCT (point‑of‑care testing), the Point of Care Director, the Medical Technologist II, Point of Care will work with test site managers at BMC to assure adequate documentation and compliance with CAP, Joint Commission, and CLIA '88 regulations. Position: Medical Technologist II. Department: Point of Care Testing. Schedule: Full Time. Essential Responsibilities / Duties Maintain a current knowledge base of technical, clinical, and regulatory aspects of all commercially available POCT methods, devices, and data management systems. Serve as a POCT consultant to BMC laboratory, test site managers, administration, and providers as deemed appropriate by the Medical Director of POCT. Participate in solving technical problems relating to established POCT methods, devices, procedures, or data management systems. Monitor performance and evaluation of function checks, instrument maintenance, and test evaluations as part of troubleshooting for discrepant or unexpected results. Verify test procedure performance characteristics prior to clinical use. Assist with timely completion, results evaluation, and appropriate corrective action for proficiency testing programs for all POCT tests. Ensure adequate documented initial training and competency assessment of all waived testing personnel involved in POCT at BMC. Assist test site managers in establishing and maintaining appropriate Quality Control documentation to verify regulatory compliance. Review adequacy of corrective action documentation for out‑of‑range QC events. Maintain an Inventory Control System to ensure use of exclusively approved validated methods and avoid the use of expired reagents and supplies. Review data management system during the post‑analytic phase of POCT to ensure the results become part of the patient’s medical record in an efficient, traceable, accurate, HIPAA‑compliant, and timely manner. Commit to continuous self‑development and scientific knowledge by maintaining continuing education and/or attending one scientific workshop per year. Participate in the department Quality Assurance program with periodic ownership of section QA projects. Follow Medical Center departmental policies and procedures; demonstrate consistent attendance and punctuality; and complete work assignments within assigned time frames. Cooperate and communicate with laboratory staff at BMC and members of other hospital departments, and other managers. Work with administrators, managers, supervisors, medical directors and staff to achieve common goals. Demonstrate concern for patient welfare and commitment to the mission of BMC and its affiliations as necessary. Incorporate Boston Medical Center values into all undertakings. Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Perform other duties as assigned or as needed, including cross training for other laboratory sections to assist in times of emergency. Adhere to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards. Job Requirements – Required Education and Experience Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science which includes successful completion of a supervised course of clinical internship in an approved hospital laboratory, or a Bachelor’s degree in an applied science (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry). Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Education and Experience For those with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Biochemistry, must have two years of experience in a clinical laboratory. For a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, must have one year of experience in a clinical laboratory. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Preferred Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or equivalent agency as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician, or specialty certification. Equivalent agency is defined as an agency that requires a degree in science from an accredited college or university with successful completion of an examination for certification. Such agencies include but are not limited to ASCP, American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), Health Education and Welfare (HEW), and American Society of Microbiologists (AMT). Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills. Ability to coordinate activities within a diverse organization and collaborate effectively with patient care providers and support staff at all levels. The POCT Technologist must have a scientific understanding of laboratory practices. Knowledge of CLIA '88, CAP, and Joint Commission regulations and accreditation process is preferred. Rotating pager coverage if needed. Compensation Range $30.05 – $43.75 per hour. This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. Base pay is determined by education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
