Central Sterile Supply Technician (SPD)

Currently recruiting Central Sterile Supply Technicians (SPD) to provide sterile processing support services at Naval Medical Center San Diego in San Diego, California . Services will be provided Monday through Friday, with coverage between 6: 00 a.M. And 5: 59 a.M., based on department needs, with coverage mostly needed during nights. Shifts will normally be scheduled as 8-hour shifts with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, or four 10-hour shifts with a 60-minute unpaid lunch break. Typical shift coverage may include PM shifts such as 12: 45 p.M. To 10: 45 p.M. Or 2: 45 p.M. To 10: 45 p.M., and night shifts such as 8: 45 p.M. To 6: 45 a.M. This is an opportunity to support surgical readiness and patient care in a military medical center environment.

DUTIES OF THE CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY TECHNICIAN (SPD):

• Receive, disassemble, and inspect reusable medical devices and surgical instrumentation for damage.
• Receive and dispose of regulated medical waste, general waste, and soiled linen.
• Comply with OSHA regulations governing the wearing of personal protective equipment while working in the decontamination area.
• Determine the correct method of decontamination, including removal of blood, tissue fragments, body fluids, and other contaminants.
• Perform decontamination methods including wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and using ultrasonic and washer decontamination or sterilizer equipment.
• Examine all items after decontamination and pre-sterilization procedures to ensure contaminants have been removed and instruments function properly.
• Ensure that all medical devices and surgical instrumentation are properly labeled and identified.
• Assemble and prepare the full range of specialty trays and instrument sets.
• Select correct wrapping or packaging materials for medical devices and surgical instrument sets.
• Select and apply sterilization processes in accordance with standard military treatment facility procedures, including Ethylene Oxide (ETO) or steam sterilization.
• Correctly label, seal, wrap, or place items in rigid containers with appropriate chemical indicator tape.
• Aerate gas-sterilized items for the required period of time.
• Receive sterilized trays, sets, and equipment from the sterilizer and check for integrity of sterilization, including indicator changes and package condition.
• Stock and properly store sterile items in the sterile storage room in accordance with facility procedures.
• Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments and trays.
• Perform equipment testing and documentation related to sterile processing functions.
• Comply with sterilization and infection control standards.
• Coordinate with operating room staff to ensure instrument readiness.
• Work PM, overnight, and rotating shifts as required.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY TECHNICIAN (SPD):

• Certificate required.
• Must have completed a central sterile supply training course.
• Must have current certification by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management or current certification by the National Institute of Health Care Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel.
• Must have at least one year of experience within the last two years as a Central Sterile Supply Technician.
• Must be able to work PM, overnight, and rotating shifts as required.
• Must be able to complete required health, immunization, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B screening requirements before providing services.
• Must be able to complete required background/security processes for access to a Navy and Defense Health Agency medical facility.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen for access to U.S. Government networks.
• Must comply with all applicable facility policies, procedures, training, safety, infection control, and documentation requirements.
