Occupational Therapist, Registered
Education/Certification Required: Bachelor's Degree or master's degree from a university program that has been accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). In addition, the therapist should have completed all the fieldwork experience in selected occupational therapy setting. Must have current National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT) certification to be a registered therapist (OTR) within the state of Texas and be licensed by the state of Texas.
Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of medical information and indications for occupational therapy treatment Skills in use of tests and measurements for assessment Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to travel to multiple work locations as assigned

Experience Required: Clinical practice preferably in pediatrics and school experience desirable Ability to conduct in-service programs Work effectively with children, parents, and health and school personnel
Function: The Occupational Therapist, Registered, is responsible for assessments, planning, and goal development and for providing appropriate intervention services designed to enhance the student's potential for learning, to assist the student in acquiring those functional performance skills needed to participate in and benefit from the educational environment, and to help the student function independently.
Reports To: Coordinator for Mary Grett School and Special Services
Responsibilities:
- Instructional Management: Works with campus staff to plan, implement, and monitor the occupational therapy programs on a systematic basis to ensure that each is responsive to student and parent needs. Utilizes program outcomes (Health Care Plans, Individualized Education Program(IEP), Health/Diagnosis database) for corrective action, programmatic improvement, and recognition of success. Provides and coordinates adaptive equipment and modified handling and techniques programmatically for campus special education staff to support instructional goals. Recommends appropriate placement of special education students for occupational therapy services at the campus and district levels. Recommends effective classroom strategies and techniques to improve instruction through collaborative teacher-therapist efforts.
- School/Organization Climate: Communicates and promotes high expectations for special education staff and students. Recognizes/Rewards special education staff and students' accomplishments in a variety of ways. Facilitates conflict resolution through the use of effective communication skills.
- School/Organization Improvement: Assists at the departmental level in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of special education policies, programs, and curriculum. Utilizes information systems to monitor occupational therapy special education students' progress as the basis for school program improvement (attendance, IEP mastery, etc.). Assesses annually-through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process-attainment of occupational therapy special education students' IEP objectives and analyzes appropriate least restrictive environment (LRE) placement.
- Personnel Management Performance: Participates in occupational therapy continuing education as mandated by NBCOT. Encourages participation by special education staff in occupational therapy-related service options available to address program, District, and employee goals. Serves as a leader in promoting occupational therapy awareness.
- Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management: Facilitates prompt and accurate reports from each campus to the Office of Special Education. Monitors the use and storage of materials and equipment to comply with state/federal laws and regulations.
- Student Management: Cooperates with principals, staff, and parents in identifying and solving school and students' occupational therapy issues. Facilitates delivery of support services to students (family counseling, special health needs, etc.). Conducts conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning program, school, and student issues. Carries out assessment and evaluation procedures for physically challenged student.
- School Community Relations: Promotes positive staff and community relations through effective dissemination of information. Communicates clearly the District's special education programs, goals, and new directions to parents and community to solicit their support. Responds to the concerns of parents and the community in a timely manner.
- Professional Growth and Development: Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner. Participates in available employee development activities. Uses information provided through evaluative feedback to improve performance. Assumes responsibility for acquiring knowledge and skills necessary for fulfilling job duties and improving leadership skills.
