The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking applicants with strong laboratory skills for a Marine Resource Specialist position in the Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture located at the West Boothbay Harbor facility. MARINE RESOURCE SPECIALIST Opening Date: August 17, 2026 Closing Date: End of the day August 28, 2026 Location: West Boothbay Harbor Position Number: 07200-2437 Position Type: Full Time/Year-Round Class Code: 9359 Grade: 21 (Professional/Technical Unit) Salary: $22.72 - $31.80 Per Hour* *This includes a 5.5% Salary Adjustment Brief Job Description: This is a technical services and scientific job that requires field and office skills relevant to public health and the environment in support of the Maine Shellfish Sanitation Program. Field work involves collecting seawater, stream, and shellfish samples and environmental data from the NH Border to western Penobscot Bay by boat or truck. Additionally, this job involves working in a team to complete shoreline surveys of homes and businesses to identify sources of coastal pollution. Qualified applicants who meet DMR requirements will serve as crew or operator aboard the Water Quality Program’s fleet of small boats. Field work is conducted year‑round in variable weather and can involve walking over steep or uneven terrain. Program needs will dictate the actual amount of time spent in the field. Office work includes data entry, basic statistical data analysis, and technical report writing in compliance with National Shellfish Sanitation Program standards. This position will work with the Shellfish Growing Area Program Supervisor to promulgate shellfish harvest closures in waters where poor water quality and/or pollution sources are found to exist. Flexibility in scheduling is mandatory as weekend, holiday and after‑hours work will be necessary depending on the season and activity. Work is performed under general supervision. This position will have some flexibility to work remotely, dependent on the needs of the program. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Intermediate education, training, and/or experience in the compilation and summarization of scientific field and laboratory data including coursework or demonstrated experience in natural resource science, management, technology, laboratory, or field work. Experience operating and trailering small boats Experience using Geographic Information Systems Knowledge of environmental and/or marine science The ability to navigate to locations using maps Currently, this position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or STEM OPT extensions.
