Police Officer - Lateral Level (up to $20,000 hiring incentive)

Educational incentive pay: 90 quarter credits, 60 semester credits, or AA = additional 6%; BA/BS = additional 8%. Premium pay: for specialty assignments and longevity after 5 years of service. Refer to the labor agreement available on the City of Marysville website for details. YOU MUST attach certificates or transcripts to your application as proof of completion of the following: Washington State Peace Officer Certification as mandated by Washington State law. Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy as required by Washington State law. Out of state candidates must have passed a basic law enforcement academy accepted by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and be eligible for and able to successfully complete the Washington State Police Basic Training Equivalency Academy. Please attach any peace officer basic training certificate and training syllabus. The purpose of this position is to protect life and property, prevent and suppress crime, apprehend criminals, and enforce laws and ordinances. Work normally involves patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement, resolving complaints, and report writing duties. The City is strongly oriented toward proactive crime prevention activities and supports community‑based law enforcement practices. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Patrols the city to preserve law and order, prevent and discover crimes, and enforce traffic regulations. Responds to calls involving traffic accidents, domestic situations, misdemeanor or felony offenses, and other public disturbances, and takes necessary police action. Provides assistance to citizens in critical and/or emergency situations where lives or property may be endangered. Investigates complaints of crimes as a uniformed officer or plain‑clothes detective, gathering evidence and locating and questioning witnesses. Prepares and presents records and cases for prosecution or investigation of criminal, civil, and traffic offenses; testifies as a witness in court. Assists other jurisdictions and agencies in routine law enforcement activities, emergency situations, and undercover investigations involving narcotics, gambling, and other activities. Trains reserve police officers. Maintains department and personal equipment in good condition. Maintains firearms proficiency. Assists with animal control activities. Experience Must have a minimum of one‑year experience within the last two years as a commissioned, full‑time, fully compensated peace officer in a civilian governmental jurisdiction before the application date. The experience must be obtained after successful completion of a full‑time police basic training academy recognized by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Reserve experience is excluded from consideration for the one‑year minimum. Experience as a Tribal Officer will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis if the candidate completed a full‑time police basic training academy recognized by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and meets all above requirements. Education and Training High school diploma or GED certificate is required. Other Qualifications At least 21 years of age by application date. Successfully pass the City’s civil service examination process for Lateral Police Officer. Successfully pass City standards for an extensive background check, polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical examination (including LEOFF II medical requirements), and drug screening. No felony convictions. Citizen of the United States of America or lawful permanent resident by application date. Ability to work a variety of scheduled shifts up to twelve hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Licenses or Certificates Successfully completed Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy as required by law, or Out of state candidates must have passed a basic law enforcement academy accepted by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and be eligible for and able to successfully complete the Washington State Police Basic Training Equivalency Academy. Maintain Washington State Peace Officer Certification as mandated by law. Possess, or obtain by hire date, a current, valid Washington State driver’s license. Possess, or obtain within six months of hire date, first aid and CPR certifications. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis; lift 25 to 75 pounds on an occasional basis; and lift and/or move 75–100 pounds rarely or in emergency situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, night vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position works in an office and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The employee sometimes works in or near moving traffic and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, or toxic or caustic chemicals, or vicious or otherwise dangerous animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
