L&I DOSH Industrial Hygiene Compliance Investigator 1, 2, or 3 (CISHI) Reg 1
State of Washington Dept. of Labor & Industries
Protecting Worker Health Through Industrial Hygiene Are you trained in the science of industrial hygiene? Can you anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control workplace environmental hazards? Do you want to apply your technical expertise in occupational exposure assessment to make Washington’s workplaces safer? L&I’s DOSH is seeking to hire an Industrial Hygiene Compliance Industrial Safety & Health Investigator at Levels 1, 2 or 3 to join our Region 1 team in either Bellingham, Mt. Vernon, or Everett, WA. In this role you will focus on workplace exposure hazards—including chemical, physical, and biological agents in industrial settings. You’ll conduct field‑based exposure assessments, perform air and noise monitoring, investigate incidents, and interpret data using established industrial hygiene standards to prevent worker overexposure. This is a technical position focused on industrial hygiene, including workplace exposure assessment, sampling, and hazard control. It is not a medical, clinical, or patient‑care role. This in‑training opportunity provides a structured path to the journey‑level investigator role, including classroom instruction, field experience, and mentorship from experienced industrial hygienists and safety professionals. CISHI1 Monthly Salary Range 56: $5,271.00 to $7,082.00 CISHI2 Monthly Salary Range 60: $5,812.00 to $7,817.00 CISHI3 Monthly Salary Range 63: $6,735.00 to $9,065.00 Salary depends on qualifications In addition to the base salary above, Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated with an additional 10% for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment—excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection—to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect, or investigate where serious hazards are present. AND IF BILINGUAL: If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently, you will receive a 5% increase in pay. All Personal Protective Equipment required for this position will be provided by L&I DOSH as specified in WAC 296‑800‑16020. About the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) At the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I), our Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) administers the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and enforces workplace safety and health standards that protect workers from hazardous job conditions. We value our employees and their work‑life balance by encouraging flexible schedules. This position can be offered with a flexible schedule (4/10’s, 9/80’s, 5/8’s, etc.) once fully trained and approved by management. Some of what you will do: This role is pivotal in maintaining Washington’s status as an OSHA‑approved State Plan program, one that is “at least as effective” as the federal standard. Conduct industrial hygiene compliance inspections and exposure assessments using standard industrial hygiene sampling methods at a variety of worksites including manufacturing, food processing, construction, and public sector operations. Identify and evaluate workplace hazards by assessing worker exposure to chemicals, airborne contaminants, noise, and other physical agents. Perform exposure monitoring, including personal and area air sampling and noise monitoring, using standard industrial hygiene equipment and methods. Interpret sampling results using established exposure limits to determine risk and compliance. Investigate workplace incidents involving potential overexposures to chemical and physical hazards, conduct root cause analysis and recommend effective control measures. Prepare detailed, legally defensible industrial hygiene reports, including sampling methodology, data interpretation, and regulatory basis for findings. Ensure compliance with WISHA occupational health standards and verify that identified hazards have been corrected. Provide practical guidance to employers and employees on industrial hygiene processes identifying exposure risks and how to reduce or eliminate them. Work with technical experts and legal teams on complex cases and provide testimony when needed. Support and mentor newer staff in industrial hygiene fieldwork, sampling approaches, and exposure assessment. And much more! Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state‑issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV), as appropriate. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate. Must be able to safely navigate a variety of work environments, including large manufacturing facilities with metal stairways, catwalks, ladders, and uneven terrain. Must also be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, using appropriate protective gear. Who We’re Looking For Industrial hygiene–focused professionals with education or experience in industrial hygiene, occupational exposure assessment, or environmental health & safety in industrial or construction settings. Analytical thinkers who can evaluate exposure data, interpret results against established limits, and clearly explain technical findings. Clear, professional communicators who can discuss technical and regulatory issues with a range of audiences, including in challenging or enforcement‑related situations. Coachable, growth‑oriented individuals who are motivated to build expertise in industrial hygiene field methods, sampling, and exposure assessment. Field‑ready professionals who are comfortable working in active industrial environments (e.g., manufacturing plants, construction sites) and using monitoring equipment in variable conditions. Motivated learners who are eager to complete structured training and develop technical proficiency in industrial hygiene investigations and compliance work.
