POSITION: Athletic Trainer (Part-Time, Hourly) Putnam High School is seeking a highly qualified professional to coordinate and provide a comprehensive athletic health care program for our student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer provides injury and illness prevention, clinical evaluation, emergency care, treatment, rehabilitation, referral, and return-to-participation support. This position operates in accordance with Connecticut law, professional standards, CIAC guidance, district policies, and annual written standing orders issued by a licensed health care provider. POSITION DETAILS & COMPENSATION:
- Schedule: Approximately 20 22 hours/week (Fall & Spring) and 25 30 hours/week (Winter); up to 6 days per week. Most assignments occur between 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., including evening, weekend, school-vacation, and postseason coverage. Assignment locations will be Putnam High School and assigned district athletic sites.
- Reports To: Athletic Director or designee.
- Anticipated Start Date: August 2026 .
- Rate of Pay: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
- Athletic Coverage & Clinical Care: Provide athletic training and game-day coverage for practices, home contests, tournaments, and post-season events. Evaluate injuries, provide immediate/emergency care, and administer treatments, taping, and rehabilitation within legal scope and standing orders.
- Emergency Preparedness: Develop, review, and rehearse venue-specific Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) with athletic staff and local responders. Inspect and maintain emergency equipment (AEDs, medical kits, cold-water immersion gear).
- Program Administration: Maintain meticulous injury reports, treatment logs, and return-to-participation documentation. Coordinate clearances with the school nurse and enter data into district, state, and CIAC reporting systems while protecting student confidentiality.
- Communication & Collaboration: Act as the primary liaison between coaches, student-athletes, families, school nurses, administrators, and medical providers regarding player restrictions and care plans.
- Education: Provide ongoing education to coaches, athletes, and families on sports medicine topics including concussion management, sudden cardiac arrest, exertional heat illness, hydration, and safe conditioning.
- Inventory Management: Maintain an active inventory of athletic training and first-aid supplies and submit recommendations for approved purchases.
- Licensure: Current, unrestricted Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) license to practice as an Athletic Trainer (maintained throughout employment).
- Credentials: Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification and ATC credential.
- Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required; Master's degree in athletic training or a related field preferred.
- Certifications: Current professional rescuer/health care provider level certifications in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Prevention of Disease Transmission.
- Experience & Knowledge: Strong understanding of evidence-based safety protocols (concussions, heat illness, cardiac arrest) and electronic injury-management systems.
- Background Check: Successful completion of all legally required criminal history, fingerprinting, child-protection background checks, and mandated reporter training.
- At least two years of athletic training experience, preferably in a middle or high school setting.
- Familiarity with CIAC and NFHS rules, medical protocols, and interscholastic programs.
- Experience with computerized concussion baseline assessments, wrestling weight-management protocols, and venue-specific EAPs.
