Overview This position is represented by the Stanford Deputy Sheriff’s Association (SDSA) and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and the SDSA governs the terms and conditions of employment. Stanford University, founded in 1891 and located near Palo Alto on an 8,800-acre campus, is among the top academic institutions in the country. Job Purpose Employees hired into the entry level, non-sworn Deputy Sheriff Cadet (trainee) position will be assigned to attend a California P.O.S.T. certified basic police training academy or a regular basic academy requalification course, if applicable. Candidates who meet department performance expectations and successfully pass the basic police academy or meet the requalification criteria will be sworn in as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Santa Clara County in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the university and the Sheriff of Santa Clara County. This agreement provides for the deputization of Stanford Deputies as sworn peace officers with full law enforcement powers to make arrests and enforce state laws and county ordinances pursuant to section 830.6 of the California Penal Code. Upon deputization, the incumbent will enter the Field Training program as a probationary Deputy Sheriff. Training and Academy At the academy, the Deputy Sheriff Cadet will receive basic training that complies with the standards set by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T). The basic training program includes approximately 920 hours of academic classes, hands-on training and physical conditioning. Knowledge-based training includes, but is not limited to: Criminal Law, Patrol Procedures, Cultural Diversity, Investigative Procedures, Report Writing, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Leadership, Ethics, Community Policing, Police Vehicle Operations, Traffic Enforcement, Accident Investigation, Handling Emotional Situations and First Aid/CPR. Hands-on training includes, but is not limited to: weapons training, role playing scenarios, patrol procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and arrest and control techniques. Recruits are required to complete 80 hours of instruction in defensive tactics which includes ground control, baton training, control holds and takedowns. The physical conditioning program consists of specific performance tests and a program of physical training, including running, push-ups, sit-ups, weight training and calisthenics. Work Environment and Physical Demands During the course of their work, the Deputy Sheriff Cadet will be exposed to potentially dangerous and adverse conditions and must be willing and able to work in emergency situations, confined spaces and intense life-threatening conditions. Cadets will be exposed to persons whose actions may place them in harm's way, bodily fluids, fumes, moving objects, and noise. Candidates must be physically able to work in circumstances requiring running, jumping, walking, crawling, kneeling, climbing, stooping, pulling and moderate lifting. The Deputy Sheriff Cadet must be willing and able to work in inclement weather conditions, irregular work hours and all shifts. SUDPS personnel are considered essential University personnel and shall respond to campus when directed to do so, even with little advance notification. Failure to complete the Academy or meet performance expectations will result in termination of employment. Use sound judgment and independence in determining priorities. Assimilate and understand information in a manner consistent with essential job functions. Work in a fast-paced environment and complete work timely and accurately. Take appropriate actions in emergency and stressful situations. Perform assigned duties while attending the basic academy, which may include testing, physical training, defensive tactics, weapons, scenario training and examinations. Use computers and supporting applications. Personal Characteristics Honesty, conscientiousness, dependability, integrity and initiative. Ability to maintain emotional control. Ability to deal with personal danger which may include exposure to hazards of emergency driving, chemical exposure or firearms training. Ability to maintain effective observation, communication and operational skills. Ability to exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under dangerous circumstances. Accept that off-duty conduct can impact on-duty credibility; may be subject to discipline up to termination if off-duty conduct violates academy/department policies. Academy Requirements Entry level law enforcement candidates attending a basic police academy are expected to demonstrate total commitment towards meeting the academic and physical requirements set by the academy. Throughout the academy, recruits should demonstrate pride, professionalism, maturity, and self-discipline. Work ethic will guide professional conduct. Additional items include: Prepare mentally and physically to approach the basic academy with eagerness to learn and develop discipline and skills to become a peace officer for California. Meet or exceed academy expectations and understand the academy chain of command. Successfully pass approximately 41 Learning Domains and practical exercises as required by POST. Pass academy-specific objectives beyond POST requirements to graduate. Maintain the required level of physical fitness; if unable to complete 30 hours of physical training in the first 12–14 weeks, removal from the academy may be recommended. Maintain a mature and professional attitude and engage tactfully with academy staff and classmates. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the academy. Attend additional training outside the academy at the Stanford Department of Public Safety if required. Attend special events on Stanford University campus as a Deputy Sheriff Cadet if required. Wear a university/academy-issued uniform and equipment as directed, including a duty belt during training and additional equipment during special training. Attend the academy during irregular hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays. Meet or exceed written performance evaluations in areas such as appearance, integrity, following directions, communication, officer safety, firearms, physical training, and overall performance. General Requirements Hold a valid California Class C Driver's License prior to appointment. Legally able to work in California. Be 21 years of age or older. Possess a high school diploma or GED; have completed 45 semester units or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university. Free of felony convictions or other disqualifying misdemeanors. Able to pass an extensive background investigation including medical and psychological examinations. Be of good moral character as determined by a background investigation. Free of physical, emotional or mental conditions that might affect performance as a peace officer. Able to accommodate academy and SUDPS training and special details in scheduling. Willing to work special events on scheduled days off or after shifts, sometimes with little notice. Ability to wear and breathe through a respirator. May be issued a department/university cell phone and must answer it while off-duty at the academy if approved by the Chief of Police. Maintain physical condition appropriate to duties, able to sit or stand for extended periods, sometimes in inclement weather. Vision not less than 20/100 in each eye; correctable to at least 20/30; no color blindness or impairment; normal hearing in each ear. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
