This role focuses on setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC milling and turning equipment to produce precision components that meet strict engineering and quality specifications. You will work primarily on 2nd shift in a modern, clean manufacturing environment, handling setups, program edits, inspections, and adjustments to maintain tight tolerances and consistent part quality.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC milling and/or turning machines, including 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis equipment as required.
- Operate CNC lathes to perform turning, boring, drilling, threading, and related operations in a safe and efficient manner.
- Load, modify, and edit CNC programs at the machine using G and M code to meet part and process requirements.
- Perform tool changes, adjust tool offsets, and configure fixtures and workholding to support production and job-shop work.
- Review and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T to understand dimensions, tolerances, and required surface finishes.
- Estimate hours and effort required for assigned operations based on drawings and specifications.
- Inspect parts using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, tape measures, spring gauges, thread gauges, and radius gauges.
- Perform first-article inspections and in-process quality checks to ensure parts meet print specifications and tight tolerances (including ±0.001 or tighter when required).
- Monitor machine performance and adjust feeds, speeds, and offsets to maintain part quality, cycle times, and process stability.
- Utilize shop floor software to record time worked on jobs and support accurate job cost reporting.
- Complete daily operator maintenance logs and perform basic preventive maintenance to keep machines in good working condition, reporting any malfunctions promptly.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area and follow all safety procedures in a manufacturing environment.
- Participate in regular production or Tier 1 meetings with supervisors and collaborate with engineering, quality, and leadership to meet production goals.
- Understand what qualifies as a quality product and take ownership of the finished parts produced.
- Work with common CNC controls (such as Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, Mitsubishi, and similar) and perform necessary adjustments at the machine.
- Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues to resolve dimensional, finish, or process problems and maintain consistent output.
- Stand for extended periods (up to 12 hours as needed) and perform shift work and overtime when production requires.
- Become self-sufficient after training and carry out other related duties as assigned to support overall shop operations.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of hands-on CNC machining experience, including setup and operation.
- 2–3 years of experience specifically setting up and running CNC lathes.
- Proficiency in operating CNC mills, lathes, or both in a production or job-shop environment.
- Strong blueprint reading skills and the ability to interpret work instructions and GD&T.
- Ability to hold close tolerances, including ±0.001 or tighter depending on part requirements.
- Experience working with common CNC controls such as Fanuc, Haas, Okuma, Mitsubishi, or similar systems.
- Comfortable performing independent machine setups, including tooling, offsets, and fixtures.
- Knowledge of tooling, inserts, and workholding methods used in CNC machining.
- Ability to accurately measure parts using calipers, micrometers, bore micrometers, height gauges, tape measures, spring gauges, thread gauges, and radius gauges.
- Understanding of G code and the ability to perform program edits at the machine when required.
- Ability to operate CNC lathes safely and follow documented safety procedures.
- High school education or GED equivalent.
- Ability to use various pneumatic hand tools and standard measuring equipment.
- Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and a commitment to producing quality parts.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to speak clearly and work collaboratively with others.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods (up to 12 hours) and work in a manufacturing environment with noise, moving machinery, and coolant.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with 5-axis machining or complex multi-axis setups.
- Exposure to CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Surfcam, or similar systems.
- Experience in aerospace, medical, or other high-precision manufacturing environments.
- Advanced GD&T proficiency and the ability to apply it in daily machining tasks.
- Experience operating cranes or hoists for handling larger workpieces or fixtures.
- Technical school training, machining certificate, or equivalent formal education in machining.
- Experience working in a modern, clean machine shop with newer CNC technology.
- Ability to participate in production or Tier 1 meetings and contribute to continuous improvement.
- Willingness to take ownership of finished parts and accept responsibility for quality and accuracy.
