Job Title: Pipe Welder/ Fitter (TIG / GTAW – Stainless Steel)

Job Description

This role focuses on precision TIG (GTAW) welding of stainless steel piping systems in accordance with applicable code standards and project specifications. You will use your welding expertise, blueprint interpretation skills, and attention to detail to produce consistent, high‑quality welds in a variety of positions and pipe sizes while supporting safe, efficient project execution.

Responsibilities

• Perform TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel pipe of various schedules and diameters, ensuring full penetration, cleanliness, and proper purge techniques.
• Interpret blueprints, weld symbols, P&IDs, and isometric drawings to determine weld placement, fit‑up requirements, and fabrication details.
• Prepare pipe joints by cutting, beveling, grinding, cleaning, and aligning materials to meet project and code requirements.
• Set up and maintain welding equipment, including power sources, torches, purge systems, gas flow settings, and appropriate filler metals.
• Weld in all positions (1G–6G) as required by the project, maintaining consistent weld quality across varying orientations and conditions.
• Follow project and industry procedures for weld cleanliness, especially in sanitary or high‑purity environments.
• Perform visual inspection of welds and assist with non‑destructive testing (NDT) requirements when needed.
• Maintain accurate weld logs, heat numbers, and material traceability documentation as required by project or code.
• Adhere to site‑specific and company safety rules, including proper use of PPE, hot‑work safety protocols, and lockout/tagout guidelines.
• Collaborate closely with pipefitters, fabricators, supervisors, and QA/QC personnel to support efficient workflow and ensure quality compliance.
• Troubleshoot welding issues such as fit‑up problems, distortion, or purge challenges and implement corrective actions to maintain weld integrity.

Essential Skills

• Proven hands‑on TIG (GTAW) welding experience on stainless steel pipe, including thin‑gauge and schedule pipe.
• Ability to pass a TIG weld test on stainless steel pipe, with strong preference for demonstrated proficiency in the 6G position.
• Strong skills in pipe fit‑up, measurement, and fabrication for stainless steel piping systems.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, welding procedures, P&IDs, isometric drawings, and fabrication drawings.
• Solid understanding of weld preparation, including cutting, beveling, cleaning, and joint alignment for stainless steel pipe.
• Knowledge of purging practices, filler metal selection, and weld sequencing for stainless steel pipe welding.
• Capability to weld to code‑quality standards, producing consistent bead appearance, penetration, and overall weld integrity.
• Familiarity with ASME Section IX welding procedures and requirements (preferred).
• Ability to work safely and follow OSHA‑compliant practices and site safety policies.
• Proficiency with TIG welding equipment setup and operation, including gas flow control and torch handling.
• Experience with basic visual weld inspection and supporting NDT activities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with sanitary or high‑purity stainless steel piping systems.
• in stainless steel pipe fitting and fabrication in industrial or commercial environments.
• Exposure to stick welding and other welding processes in addition to TIG, where applicable.
• Comfort collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including pipefitters, fabricators, and QA/QC personnel.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining documentation such as weld logs and material traceability records.
• Ability to adapt to changing project requirements, weld positions, and schedules while maintaining quality standards.

Work Environment

You work in an industrial or construction setting focused on stainless steel piping systems, using TIG welding equipment, purge systems, and standard fabrication tools such as cutters, grinders, and measuring instruments. The role involves welding in multiple positions (1G–6G), sometimes in confined or elevated areas, and requires consistent attention to weld cleanliness, particularly in sanitary or high‑purity applications. You follow OSHA‑compliant safety practices, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment, adherence to hot‑work procedures, and compliance with lockout/tagout protocols. The environment is hands‑on and production‑oriented, with close coordination among welders, pipefitters, fabricators, and QA/QC personnel to meet project deadlines and quality requirements.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Danville, VA.

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $31.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Danville,VA.
