Detailed Description:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track position in Organic Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level beginning in Fall 2027.

We seek a dynamic teacher/scholar with experience in organic chemistry, broadly defined, that complements our department. Interdisciplinary applications are encouraged. Successful candidates will have a robust commitment to undergraduate research and education that engages chemistry and biochemistry majors as well as non-majors.

Teaching will include courses in the organic chemistry sequence, advanced courses in organic chemistry, courses in their area of expertise and courses in other areas of the curriculum that enrich the liberal arts experience. We aim to hire faculty who are committed to creating a welcoming environment that fosters each student's academic and personal development, and creating an active, externally-funded research program that mentors undergraduate students in a cohesive academic community. Key responsibilities include excellence in teaching via the use/development of innovative, effective pedagogical practices, designing and teaching engaging courses within the curriculum, providing hands-on research opportunities, and guiding undergraduate students in their research endeavors to develop critical thinking and independent research skills. We anticipate that the successful candidate will work with colleagues from different disciplines to integrate science with broader societal issues and take full advantage of the USD STEM Initiative, which will establish a high impact, collaborative teaching and research environment that integrates the natural sciences and engineering. 

Job Requirements: Qualified candidates should hold a Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field and postdoctoral training is preferred. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research, mentoring undergraduates, and fostering a welcoming environment.

$6,931.25-$7,917 monthly: Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.

The statement of teaching philosophy could include how teaching strategies informed by chemical education research have been or will be implemented; strategies for assessing student learning; ideas for new interdisciplinary upper-division courses; and especially outlining a commitment to inclusive pedagogical practices and approaches for creating an inclusive teaching environment. Research Statement and Proposed Research Projects should include brief highlights of past research accomplishments; description of proposed areas of research; research program's relevance and significance to the field; how research may be maintained and strengthened through external funding and collaborations; how the proposed research projects are appropriate and tailored to the undergraduate research environment; and, importantly, how undergraduate research students will be mentored.
