Funeral Director Apprentice

Responsibilities Compassionately facilitate funeral arrangement discussions with deceased next of kin, presiding over visitation, funeral, and graveside services in accordance with family wishes, company expectations, and local, state, or federal laws. As licensed Funeral Director, ensure compliance with mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulations within funeral establishments. Receive or initiate calls to deceased next of kin, obtain or confirm contact information, discuss needs, schedule arrangement appointments, and provide email confirmation. Perform removals or transfers adhering to company standards and processes. Care for deceased respectfully, update removal status in proprietary software, greet next of kin, and escort them to the meeting space. Initiate and facilitate arrangement conferences, assess needs, summarize desired outcomes, and discuss available life insurance and benefits such as Veteran benefits. Promote funeral, cemetery, and crematory services and merchandise (catering, flowers, music, Ever Lasting Memory products), and transition to Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor for property and merchandise options, pricing, and contract completion. Review and authorize merchandise and service contract revisions, confirm authorization to proceed with service arrangements. Preside as Master of Ceremonies for visitation, funeral, or graveside services, conduct graveside services when required, verify removal of personal belongings, and visually inspect deceased for dressing and attire. Inspect service arrangements against contractual agreements and next‑of‑kin expectations, take corrective action as needed, and provide guidance to service team members. Interact with family and guests to fulfill death‑care requests, obtain leads for pre‑need services. Plan events, including resource planning, ordering music, flowers, or catering; create MEm products (scanning photos, ordering memorabilia, writing obituaries, creating online memorials); prepare event rooms and clean up after events. Perform attendant duties (parking lot attendant, driver, usher, pallbearer, courier); attend community or charity events to promote location or market. Assist with additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. Qualifications Education & Licenses: Graduated from an accredited school or college of mortuary science. Current Funeral Director license in the practicing state. Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required to operate company-owned vehicles. Experience: Industry experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Cognitive ability to reason, plan, identify problems, learn quickly, and apply learning to new situations. Process and results oriented; motivated to keep projects moving by removing obstacles and exploring alternatives. Positive attitude, drive to advance understanding of the industry and business, and self-motivation. Ability to build professional, trusting business relations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; public speaking skills to influence and gain consensus. Proficient using databases and automated processes; proficient MS Office skills. Work Conditions Environment: Work takes place both indoors and outdoors, throughout all seasons and weather. Attire: Professional business attire required when in contact with families. Postures: Frequent continuous sitting or standing up to 6 hours per day; climbing stairs to access buildings. Physical Demands: Manual dexterity required for paperwork, calculators, computers, phone usage; ability to push and pull up to 150 pounds on flat and inclined surfaces or ramps.
