HVAC Mechanic III

Under direct supervision: Diagnose, service, repair, and maintain commercial chilled water, heating water, and refrigeration systems and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment, including chillers, condensers, compressors, pumps, fans, air handlers, etc. Diagnose, service, repair, and maintain Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and pneumatic controls.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

High School Diploma or GED Valid Texas Driver's License Certified Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Certified Universal Technician for refrigerant handling Maintenance Electrician License preferred Completed courses by manufacturer's representatives in large tonnage chilled water systems installation, service, and repair Completed courses by manufacturer's representatives in screw chiller and low-pressure centrifugal chiller installation, service, and repair Completed courses by manufacturer's representatives in freezer and cooler installation, service, and repair Completed courses by manufacturer's representatives in ice machine installation, service, and repair

Special Knowledge/Skills

Extensive knowledge of all types of commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems Extensive knowledge of these energy management software and control systems: I NET, TAC, Alerton, Automated Logic, and Delta Ability to read and understand instructions in English Ability to use hand tools and power tools Ability to read blueprints and diagrams Ability to work independently Must possess good leadership qualities

Experience

Seven years of experience in diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining industrial chilled water, heating water, and refrigeration systems, and various types of HVAC equipment, including rooftop equipment. Diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining DDC and pneumatic controls.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

• Diagnose, service, repair, and maintain industrial chilled water, heating water, and HVAC equipment, including cooling towers, water-cooled & air-cooled chillers, heating water boilers, condensers, compressors, package units, split systems, pumps, fans, coils, air handlers, etc.
• Diagnose, service, repair, and maintain refrigeration systems, including walk-in coolers and freezers, pass-through coolers, milk boxes, ice machines, electric water fountains, etc.
• Diagnose, service, repair, and maintain various types of energy management software, DDC, and pneumatic control systems.
• Install new HVAC systems and components.
• Relocate and expand existing HVAC systems.
• Fabricate, assemble, and install ductwork and piping according to specifications and code.
• Wire and connect motors, compressors, pumps, temperature, humidity, and CO sensors according to schematics.
• Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC equipment, including filter changes and cleaning of chillers, condensers, and coils.
• Perform water treatment testing and maintenance on cooling towers, heating water, and chilled water loops.
• Install and repair closed-cell foam and fiberglass insulation.
• Select materials and hardware, and prepare time-and-materials estimates.
• Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment by following established inspection procedures.
• Receive and complete work orders using a computer or iPad.
• Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
• Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
• Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure work areas are clean and neat.
• Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
• Maintain reliable and regular attendance.
• Respond to emergency calls as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Safety

• Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
• Operate tools and equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques when performing job duties, including lifting, climbing, and other tasks.
• Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
• Maintain safety standards in compliance with federal, state, and insurance regulations, as well as district requirements, and develop a preventive safety program.
• Ensure equipment is maintained in optimum operating condition.

Equipment Used

• Hand tools, power tools, electrical testing meter, refrigerant gauges, pressure gauges, thermometers, data loggers, sheet metal fabrication tools, brazing torch, reclaimer, vacuum pump, chain hoist, and pressure washer.
• Light truck or van.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

• Frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, heavy lifting, and carrying. Must be able to lift fifty pounds. Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions; around electrical power; both inside and outside; on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, ladders, lifts, and scaffolding; and around machinery with moving parts.
• Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, excessive noise, dust, debris, fumes, and toxic chemicals.
• Frequent districtwide travel.
• Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
