BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:The Facilities Environmental Coordinator has responsibilities for the onsite Facilities Compliance activities occurring at a specific CFC location while supporting the governance of Facilities Compliance activities within the entire supply chain. This will primarily include Waste Management, EPCRA, SPCC, etc. In addition, this position will have a basic understanding and application of Product Stewardship including Hazmat Storage and Transportation. The position also requires the ability to train other associates both within and outside the department in core areas. The Facilities Environmental Coordinator will also actively participate in planning and execution of department projects, interpreting and explaining regulations, tracking emerging issues and participating as a member of EC&S department's teams to develop and execute action plans for new or existing regulations and Sustainability initiatives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilities Compliance Activities
- Develops basic understanding of federal, state, and local environmental regulations including but not limited to waste, Spill Prevention Countermeasures and Control (SPCC), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), recycling requirements, etc.
- Coordinates with third party consultants and effected MSC locations to develop and implement spill prevention countermeasures and control (SPCC) plans to meet EPA requirements for facilities impacted by the regulation. This includes assisting and monitoring sites to ensure that all required training, monthly and annual inspections, and recordkeeping are compliant.
- Actively coordinates and leads facilitate compliance projects e.g. – branch/CFC/CSC waste surveys) to identify gaps and/or process improvements needed for improved compliance and potential cost savings.
Hazmat Transportation / Storage
- Reviews and classifies hazardous items for DOT transportation compliance.
- Be able to facilitate hazmat shipments for small parcel, LTL, Truck, Vessel, Air, and AFMAN, including marks, labels, packaging, shipping, placarding, and segregation.
- Reviews and classifies hazardous items for storage compliance within our facilities.
- Ensure that the hazmat storage areas are appropriately configured in the WMS and account for the correct storage capacity in those areas engineered for the specified hazardous substances.
- Provide audits for both hazardous packing and hazardous storage processes within the Supply Chain Operations.
Waste Profiling / Management
- Applies knowledge of US EPA regulations from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to properly characterize and dispose of wastes, including the review of hazardous waste manifests and Land Disposal Restriction Forms.
- Maintain Central Accumulation Area and Satellite Accumulation Areas across the facility in a manner that ensures regulatory and statute compliance.
- Coordinates with waste companies to properly track and manage cradle-to-grave liabilities and recordkeeping.
- Provides guidance to branches and CFCs on Universal Waste storage and disposal as well as waste minimization opportunities.
- Decontaminate and dispose of empty drums and/or containers according to RCRA and disposal guidelines.
- Process waste and prepare waste containers for shipment, perform container closures per TSDF closure instructions, prepare shipping papers and waste manifests.
- Assist in completing all necessary paperwork for processing materials to include DOT shipping papers and waste manifests.
- Transport materials and waste to and from various locations across the facility.
- Assist in the loading/unloading of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials of various size containers (e.g., totes, drums, etc.) at designated sites utilizing appropriate equipment for which you are appropriately trained.
- Coordinate with external agencies, such as regulatory authorities and waste disposal facilities, to ensure proper waste management practices are followed.
- Monitor and evaluate hazardous waste management practices, procedures, and equipment to identify opportunities for improvement and implement corrective actions.
- Perform and document audits & inspections including but not limited to SPCC inspections, RCRA, Hazardous & Universal Waste inspections, and internal environmental audits.
- Assist in the development and implementation of Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures relative to waste management.
- Conduct training sessions for employees to promote awareness and understanding of hazardous waste management protocols and best practices.
- Identify hazards, notify EHS Management, recommend corrective action, and effectively communicate hazards and corrective action with others.
- Participate in emergency response activities and provide guidance on appropriate actions to mitigate risks associated with hazardous materials incidents.
- Evaluates and manages environmental issues on site, including chemical spills. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Perform general housekeeping in accumulation areas.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory changes related to hazardous waste management to ensure compliance and recommend improvements.
- Seeks opportunities to minimize all wastes through recycling, on-site use, and/or donation programs. This includes reaching out to schools, government agencies, and companies to find suitable recipients for these items.
Product Stewardship Basics
- Develops a basic understanding of product stewardship regulations and laws (labels, SDS/MSDS, compliance with GHS, CA Proposition 65, etc.) and how they apply to this position and company
- compliance.
- Reads and uses information on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine applicable restrictions and/or warnings required for product transportation, storage, and/or disposal.
- Evaluates vendor SDSs for Global Harmonized System (GHS) OSHA compliance.
- Coordinates with 3rd party SDS management company to reconcile inconsistent or outdated SDS and maintain parity.
Research and Analytics
- Research existing and emerging regulations to determine risk and impact to MSC. Suggests courses of action to Specialist or Senior Specialist to ensure MSC compliance.
- Under the guidance of department management, Specialist, or Senior Specialist assists with specific compliance projects.
- Utilizes the AS400 and ASI systems to determine items' current status and classification as well as run reports. Begins to run more complicated reports in AS400, ASI and SAP systems. Analyzes the reports for findings and reports results to management.
- Analyzes and prepares detailed reports on sustainability attributes at MSC facilities and presents results to department management. Writes procedures and processes as assigned to support the EC&S Department Environmental Management System.
Customer Service / Collaboration
- Provides customer service to internal/external customers and responds to requests in person, by phone, and/or through email in a timely manner.
- Maintains successful cross functional relationships and continuously seeks to understand the requirements and expectations for each of those departments.
- Ability to work in teams to support and increase department productivity, engagement, and Sustainability efforts.
- Assists in completing contractor qualification questionnaires, ESH questionnaires, and Sustainability questionnaires.
- Builds relationships with other departments within MSC to improve communication, build trust, develop more effective and efficient interdepartmental processes, and fuel potential for company growth.
Reporting
- Completes at least three reports that are submitted to government agencies and is the team lead for one report.
- Facilitate collection of data and preparation of Tier 2, Waste/Recycling Reporting, and Scope Emissions (1,2, and 3) for MSC facilities.
- Tests and evaluates IT project updates in the QA environment and provides information to IT programmers and department management.
- Provides information to department management on the effectiveness of IT program updates.
General
- Trains and assists in the development of other Coordinators in various aspects of their jobs.
- Conducts training virtually (i.e., over the internet) and/or in person in areas of expertise to associates in other departments and locations.
- Takes the lead on assigned regulations for summaries and presentations for emerging regulations.
- Complete assessments of the impact of hazmat returns on both MSC hazardous waste and universal waste generation (i.e., amount of waste created), identifying root causes for the business to address.
- Responsible for assigned sections of EC&S Department Environmental Management System.
- Will coordinate with department associates to complete updates and present to department.
- Actively expands knowledge in EC&S department functions through training and research.
- Stays current with EC&S department and mandated regulatory training.
- Adheres to the compliance, safety, security and internal guidelines/requirements for the position and company.
- Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC's vision and unity of purpose.
- Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
What You Need:
- Four-year technical degree, preferably in Engineering, Environmental Science or Chemistry or the equivalent work experience is required.
- An alternative requirement would be a four-year degree (in a non-preferred area of study) with three to five years in hazardous waste management or similar role required.
- RCRA Trained or trained within 90-days of start date.
- In-depth knowledgeable of federal and state environmental laws and regulations pertaining to hazardous waste management including Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
- Excellent understanding of hazardous waste storage, transportation, and disposal techniques.
- Familiarity with environmental sustainability practices and waste reduction strategies.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify and address potential safety hazards.
- Presents a professional image and effective communication skills when collaborating with internal teams, external agencies, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently (with limited supervision required) and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Possesses high integrity and ethical standards, demonstrating good judgement and decision-making.
- Knowledge of emergency response protocols and procedures related to hazardous materials incidents.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to occupational health and safety regulations.
- Proficient in learning and using computer software and databases for record-keeping and reporting purposes; including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite® - Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook.
- Ability to stay abreast of new developments in environmental policies and regulations and communicates impacts to EC&S management required.
Bonus Points If You Have:
- Preferred two years of hazardous waste management or similar role.
- Preferred certification in hazardous waste management or related fields (e.g., Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, DOT Hazardous Material Handling)
- Preferred MHE certifications or certified within 90-days of start date.

- A valid driver's license may be required.
- Position requires up to 15% of travel
- Strong physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects when necessary
Compensation starting at $46300 - $72820 depending on candidate location and experience.
The salary range represented is based on similar roles in comparable industries, and the cost of labor in respective cities. Actual compensation is based on the candidate's relevant experience, education requirements and peer pay equity. The Company reserves the right to modify the range as market conditions change.
