Description:
Unit consists of 27 beds.
Common diagnoses include adults 18 and older, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, substance abuse, and intellectually challenged populations.
Patients are medically stable and admitted from the emergency room.
No detox or rehab patients are accepted on this unit.
Job duties include conducting safety checks, room checks, taking vitals, and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs).
PCTs will perform direct observation of patient care and rounding every 15 minutes.
Phlebotomy experience is required, with some re-education provided on the unit.
Blood glucose checks and one-on-one monitoring of patients will also be part of the responsibilities.
PCTs will assist nursing staff as needed throughout the shift.
There is no use of physical restraints on this unit, but training on the subject will be provided during orientation.
Travelers may be placed in charge roles with a maximum of 5-6 patients assigned.
RT services can be consulted for patients requiring oxygen support or treatments, but transfers may occur if patients need continuous oxygen.
No telemetry or monitor techs are available on the unit; RNs will read strips as necessary.
Shifts for PCTs include days from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, evenings from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, and nights from 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM.
Travelers will need to provide availability and remain flexible to fill gaps in scheduling.
Every other weekend and holiday coverage of 2-3 shifts per year is required.
Travelers are usually the first to float to any psychiatric adult and children units, including emergency and crisis areas.
Scrub color is Eggplant.
A unit-specific orientation of 3 days will be provided before floating to other areas.
Emergency situations may require picking up extra shifts on short notice.
Excessive call-ins will be taken seriously and may lead to termination.
