Radiology Technologist

Responsibilities Accountable for the performance and documentation of all diagnostic procedures utilizing proper technical parameters to produce quality studies. Position patients, adjust equipment, and secure immobilization and support devices as needed to perform procedures. Identify each patient correctly prior to an exam procedure using two forms of identification, as indicated by the established Adovcate Healthcare Time out protocol. Communicate effectively using AIDET with patients before, during and after exams to assure their comfort and cooperation. Provide explanations of delay for testing to patients who are waiting past their scheduled test times. Demonstrate good oral communications with patients, fellow associates, physicians and administration. Adhere to Standards of Behavior at all times. Responsible for database entry of appropriate exam charges, starting, completing and verifying each exam for appropriate interpretation by physician upon completion. Responsible for maintaining patient privacy while obtaining patient history and any pertinent continuing discussion. Adherence to proper handwashing technique at all times. Perform associated data center and clerical duties as needed. Must be knowledgeable in all aspects of the day-to-day operation and organization of the Department of Radiology, including department policy and practices, scheduling, reception, and data center area. Prepare transport requests as needed; schedule inpatients/outpatients as required by ongoing patient schedules. Assist patient to and from procedure area by prescribed means; transport patient as required. Must know the duties of the reception desk and data center and may be required to perform them. Must be able to complete and package a CD of images as requested. Adhere to all safety standards to ensure patient safety and quality care. Verify inpatient and outpatient orders as established by the Time Out protocol. Use appropriate lead markers as required and obtain consent indicating that patient is not pregnant. Obtain radiologist consent/input if the patient is pregnant. Understand operation, technique factors, and idiosyncrasies of commonly used radiographic systems; maintain competencies defined by the ACR, regulatory standards, IEMA, ASRT, and related requirements. Operate all radiographic equipment; select and modify technical factors to optimize image quality with the lowest possible dose. Check equipment daily; inspect for hazards; report malfunctions to the Charge Technologist and Clinical Engineering. Problem-solve regarding equipment malfunctions, alternative patient positioning, and view limitations. Present and maintain a professional standard; maintain positive guest relations and appropriate telephone etiquette. Observe hospital/department guidelines concerning dress, name badge, radiation badge, and appearance. Comply with regulatory standards from IDPH, IEMA, OSHA, ARRT and ASRT. Operate portable radiographic equipment in patient rooms, ICU, GI lab and surgery; document radiation dose and time use; assist with PACS-related image viewing; assist radiologists with fluoroscopic procedures as needed. Qualifications and Requirements Education/Experience: Maintain active IEMA License; minimum experience as a Radiologic Technologist (new grad accepted); knowledge of all areas of general diagnostic radiology. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Understanding of positioning and technique factors as in Merrill’s Directory; able to perform all common radiologic procedures; ARRT Registry within one year of employment; IEMA License. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Able to respond on short notice; flexible start times; may require rotating shifts and alternate days; willing to work overtime; able to periodically take call; able to transport, move, and lift patients; musculoskeletal hazards from lifting and repetitive motions; may be exposed to ionizing radiation and infectious diseases. Lifting requirement clarification: If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact, able to lift up to 35 pounds; for heavier lifts, use patient handling equipment with at least one other associate when available; case-by-case assessment of unique lifting situations. Additional Information: Attend annual in-services on fire safety, infection control, and radiation protection; attend additional seminars; join professional associations to stay current; maintain confidentiality of staff, patient, and supervisor information; able to work under stress and adhere to policies and procedures; CPR certification and professional decorum required; comply with DeMedici computer program updates.
