This is accomplished by maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and taps. Other duties may include ensuring the safety of equipment and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Lays and maintains water lines by using a backhoe to dig holes, installing, repairing and removing water meters, locating water leaks, inspecting, installing and repairing water lines, tracing, locating and tapping lines for the City and maintaining and repairing fire hydrants. Maintains sewer lines by cleaning and repairing sewer lines, correcting stoppages, repairing manholes, conducting preventative maintenance inspections, testing for infiltration or ex-filtration, repairing roadways and easements and assisting with pump station repairs. Repairs water and sewer taps by excavating to the main, tapping lines, running new services, assisting with the installation, repair and maintenance of water mains, valves, hydrants, meters and wells and logging water lines. Ensures the safety of equipment by performing preventative maintenance on equipment and tools, cleaning and fixing components and changing the oil. Education & Experience Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Education and experience that provide the necessary knowledge and skills may also be considered, but a typical way to qualify is by obtaining: High School Diploma or equivalent with no prior relevant experience. Conditions of Employment Safe driving record and must possess a valid Texas Class C driver’s license. Clear criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen Texas Class A CDL required or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months from the date of hire. Hours/Work Schedule This is a full-time non-exempt position with benefits. Schedule may be modified if department needs arise. 4-Day Workweek w/ overtime opportunity Supervision Exercised Direct Supervision: Work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; autonomy is granted at the task level; work is subject to both general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. Knowledge of: City, State, and Federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Water, wastewater, and pump and motor systems, equipment, and operating procedures. Light and heavy equipment operations and maintenance. Skill in: Establishing and maintaining working relationships with professional and support staff, vendors, the public, and City employees. Providing outstanding customer service and conflict resolution. Operating light and heavy equipment. Reading and interpreting gauges and other related instrumentation. Reading and understanding City, State and Federal rules and regulations. Working effectively in a high-pressure environment with changing priorities. Effectively communicating orally. Physical Demands / Work Environment Ability to work outside, including in extreme temperatures, wetness, and humidity. Ability to work with mechanical, chemical, electrical, and fire hazards. Ability to stand and walk for long periods. Ability to operate light and heavy equipment and hand and power tools. Ability to lift, push, pull, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance frequently. Ability to operate city or personal vehicle for business purposes.
