Fleet Mechanic: Heavy Vehicles & Equipment Specialist

Fleet Mechanic I (BC-08) Pay: $5,471/month. This entry‑level opportunity is for individuals pursuing a career in repair and maintenance of automotive and/or heavy vehicles and equipment. Candidates must meet the minimum qualification requirements and be capable of successfully attaining the skills needed to progress to the journey level. Fleet Mechanic II (BC-10) Pay: $6,079/month. This level independently repairs and overhauls a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative‑fuel vehicles and equipment that are part of the City’s fleet. Responsibilities include light vehicles and equipment (cars, light to medium trucks), construction equipment (front‑end loaders, paving machines), and heavy vehicles and equipment (refuse trucks, dump trucks). Other related duties may also be required. Fleet Mechanic III (BC-11) Pay: $6,300/month. This level independently repairs, maintains, and overhauls a variety of heavy motorized vehicles and equipment in the City’s fleet such as refuse trucks, dump trucks, cranes, bulldozers, rollers, and graders. It is a substantially full‑time assignment with additional optional duties. Special Work Conditions Depending on the department, you may be required to work weekends and holidays and may be subject to rotating and/or night shift work. Requirements Experience Requirement Fleet Mechanic I: Experience or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the duties of this position, typically obtained through a recognized automotive or diesel mechanic program. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of basic components, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory; diagnostic techniques; routine repairs and adjustments. Fleet Mechanic II: Experience or training of sufficient scope and quality to perform journey‑level duties. Candidates must have experience in maintenance and overhauls of light and heavy motorized vehicles and or equipment, having assisted in more complex tasks and received supplemental training. Fleet Mechanic III: Experience or training of sufficient scope and quality to perform journey‑level duties. Candidates must have repaired and overhauled complex hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy vehicles such as dump trucks, truck tractors, and refuse trucks. Education / Training Credits An Associate’s degree in Applied Science in Diesel Mechanics Technology may qualify for Fleet Mechanic I. A Certificate of Achievement in Automotive Technology or Diesel Mechanics may receive credit along with relevant work experience. ASE certificates may receive credit for journey‑level mechanics. Verification Requirement Applicants must submit evidence of education or formal training. Attach an electronic copy of a diploma, official transcript showing the embossed seal, applicable foreign credential evaluation, or certificate. Unofficial transcripts and partial copies are not accepted. Documentation must be legible and complete. License / Certificate Requirements Fleet Mechanic I – Valid Driver’s License (Type 3); D.O.T. Medical Exam Certificate; Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B) by end of probation; Certificate approved by the Environmental Protection Agency by end of probation; State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate; Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator. Fleet Mechanic II – Valid Driver’s License (Type 3); D.O.T. Medical Exam Certificate; Prior to appointment; Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Type B) by end of probation; Certificate approved by the Environmental Protection Agency by end of probation; Certificate of Fitness for Crane and Hoist Operator prior to appointment; State Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certificate prior to appointment. Fleet Mechanic III – Valid Driver’s License (Type 3); D.O.T.
