Staff Nurse IV - Inpatient

This recruitment is being used to multiple vacancies at the San Joaquin General Hospital and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. Compensation and Incentives Shift Differential: $2.00/hour – PM Shift; $4.50/hour – Night Shift Education Supplement: 5% of base salary (eligibility criteria per CNA MOU) Charge Pay: $3.00/hour Preceptor Pay: $2.00/hour Standby Pay: 33% of base salary Longevity Pay: 7.5% of base salary after 10 years (20,800 regular paid hours); 10% of base salary after 15 years (31,200 regular paid hours) 3% COLA effective April 2026 Completion bonuses: $2,000 upon completion of first year equivalent employment (2,080 hours); $1,000 upon completion of third year equivalent employment (6,240 hours); $3,000 upon completion of sixth year equivalent employment (12,480 hours) Vacation Accrual Rate: consistent with the candidate's total years of public service. Sick Leave Bank: Up to 160 hours of unreimbursable sick leave from last employment. Position Details San Joaquin General Hospital is an advanced level Staff Nurse IV position within the Staff Nurse series. Employees in this class are expected to be knowledgeable clinical practitioners who can provide an advanced level of patient care with minimum guidance and supervision, serve as preceptors for new employees, and complete an annual clinical project. Typical Duties Initiates the nursing process and performs advanced level clinical patient care, including complex and difficult therapeutic measures prescribed by medical authority within the limits of the Nurse Practice Act and department policy. Participates in preparation and implementation of written nursing care plans for individual patients. Evaluates total nursing needs of the patient, including physical, psychological, spiritual, cultural and socio‑economic aspects. Plans, coordinates and administers total patient care; evaluates symptoms, reactions, and progress. May function as a first‑level supervisor in an outpatient clinic or program over para‑professional or clerical staff; may select, assign, train, direct, evaluate and discipline staff as appropriate. May facilitate insurance billing and other reimbursement‑related procedures by processing appropriate paperwork. Works with patients and families through teaching, counseling, and other methodology to help them understand, cope with, and accept illness, treatment, and therapy; assists in self‑care strategies. Serves as a preceptor for new employees by orienting, teaching, and participating in the evaluation process. Maintains record of patient's health care treatment and/or hospital stay; prepares reports and standard forms. May function as a charge nurse in an inpatient unit; may assume full responsibility for the supervision of a shift in the absence of a Staff Nurse V or Nursing Department Manager. Maintains and updates knowledge base and nursing skills by reading literature, attending workshops, lectures, conferences, and classes as may be required by the Administration of the Department of Health Care Services. Participates in the identification of staff development needs for members of the Nursing staff. Participates on committees as assigned; may represent the Department of Health Care Services to outside agencies. Prepares and presents, within established guidelines, clinical projects as assigned. Knowledge, Ability, and Physical/Mental Requirements Knowledge: Theory, techniques, and practices of nursing; new developments in patient care; skills specific to clinical scope of practice; nursing process; nursing staffing patterns; principles and practices of employee supervision; health care safety principles. Ability: Supervise and assist health care team; maintain high standard of care; handle patients empathetically; instruct in self‑care; follow instructions accurately; establish effective working relationships; maintain accurate records; develop individualized care plans; coordinate services; set priorities; interpret policies; teach clinical skills; promote positive learning environment. Physical/Mental Requirements: Mobility, constant walking, frequent keyboard operation, standing, pushing/pulling; frequent lifting and restraining; vision for reading and close work; dexterity for repetitive motion; hearing and speaking; concentration; exposure to hazardous materials; working weekends and nights; may work at heights; exposure to assaultive behavior; environmental conditions. Qualifications Experience: Two years of progressively responsible experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting at a level equivalent to a San Joaquin County Staff Nurse III or Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Health Science, or closely related field. Experience: One year of progressively responsible experience as a registered nurse in an acute care hospital at a level equivalent to Staff Nurse III. Licenses: Current registration as a nurse in the State of California. Special Requirements: Successful completion of a San Joaquin General Hospital in‑service or comparable training program in nursing preceptor‑ships may be required prior to completion of the probationary period and periodically thereafter; possession of a San Joaquin County Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) certificate, ACLS certificate, ICU/CCU training or other approved training may be required for assignment to specialized nursing units. Specific unit requirements for Cardiac Catheter Lab/EKG, Emergency Room, Hemodialysis, Intensive Care Unit, Labor‑Delivery‑Recovery‑Postpartum, Medical Surgical Units, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU/ICN), Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Progressive Care Unit (PCU), and Surgery/Recovery. Benefits Health Insurance: Full‑time employees eligible for one of three health plans: Kaiser, Select, or Premier. Employees pay a portion of premiums. Dependent coverage available. Dental Insurance: Choice of two dental plans: Delta Dental and United Health Care–Select Managed Care Direct Compensation. No cost for employee‑only coverage; dependent coverage at employee expense. Vision Insurance: Coverage through Vision Service Plan. No employee cost for employee‑only coverage; dependent coverage at employee expense. Life Insurance: Coverage based on years of service: $1,000 (1–3 yrs), $3,000 (3–5 yrs), $5,000 (5–10 yrs), $10,000 (10+ yrs). Additional term life insurance up to $200,000 possible. Flexible Benefits Plan: Voluntary program for health‑related expenses and dependent care costs. Retirement Plan: County Retirement Act of 1937. See SJCERA for details. Deferred Compensation: 457 plan with annual contributions up to $22,500 or 100% of compensation; age 50+ up to $30,000. Vacation: Max earned vacation based on years and part‑time status. Holiday: 14 paid holidays per year. Educational Leave: 40 hrs (full‑time) or 24 hrs (part‑time) per fiscal year. Sick Leave: 12 working days per year with unlimited accumulation. Bereavement Leave: 3 days paid for immediate family member; additional 2 days for spouse, partner, parent, or child. Merit Salary Increase: Initial salary; after 52 weeks on each pay step eligible for merit increase. Standby Pay: 33.33% of regular hourly rate. Educational Supplement: 5% of base salary for eligible nurses meeting certain criteria. License/Certificate Fees: Reimbursement for renewal fees under the CNA MOU. Pre‑Employment Physical Exam: Provided at no cost. Job Sharing: Allowed for regular, permanent full‑time employees with approval. Educational Reimbursement Program: Up to $850 per fiscal year or $800 per semester for degree programs. Parking Supplemental Downtown Stockton: Up to $17 per pay period for employees working in Downtown Core Area. School Activities: Up to 40 hrs per year for child school activities. Selection Procedures Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will go through the following examination process: Written Exam: Multiple‑choice; must score at least 70%. Oral Exam: Structured interview; must score at least 70%. Written & Oral Exam: Weighted 60/40 unless otherwise indicated; must score at least 70% on each.
