Senior Subcontract Manager

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Subcontract Manager based in the United States.

This senior-level role offers the opportunity to lead complex contract and subcontract activities supporting innovative, technically sophisticated programs.
You’ll take ownership across the full contract lifecycle, from strategy and negotiation through administration, change management, and closeout.
The position sits at the intersection of contracts, procurement, legal, finance, engineering, and business development.
You’ll serve as a key interface with government and commercial customers, helping align agreements with business objectives, risk tolerance, and performance requirements.

Accountabilities

• Lead contract management activities across assigned programs and projects, including government contracts, subcontracts, grants, government funding opportunities, and commercial agreements.
• Serve as the primary interface with external government and commercial customer contracting organizations, maintaining clear communication throughout contract development, negotiation, and execution.
• Support business development activities by reviewing agreements, developing negotiation strategies, and leading contract execution.
• Oversee executed contracts with a focus on compliance, change control, risk management, quality, cost, schedule, and overall performance.
• Lead contract negotiations and administration while ensuring agreements remain aligned with organizational objectives, regulatory requirements, and established risk tolerances.
• Provide subcontract management guidance and oversight in partnership with Procurement, including support for sourcing and subcontracting strategies.
• Coordinate cross-functional contract reviews with Legal, Finance, Procurement, Engineering, Business Development, and other stakeholders.
• Contribute to pricing support, supplier strategy, procurement coordination, and the effective management of materials, equipment, and services.
• Ensure contract records, documentation, approvals, and supporting materials remain accurate, complete, and audit-ready.
• Help develop and improve contracting processes, tools, workflows, and best practices to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
• Support department leadership through staff training, process development, budget planning, and related strategic initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Approximately 15–20 years of experience in technically oriented contracting, contract management, or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex contracts across their full lifecycle, including negotiation, execution, administration, change management, compliance, and closeout.
• Experience working with government contracts, subcontracts, commercial agreements, grants, or government-funded programs.
• Strong understanding of contract risk, compliance, commercial terms, negotiation strategy, cost, schedule, performance, and supplier relationships.
• Experience partnering effectively with Legal, Finance, Procurement, Engineering, Business Development, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
• Strong organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, manage competing priorities, and lead cross-functional teams effectively.
• Demonstrated integrity, trustworthiness, transparency, and commitment to collaborative problem-solving.
• Preferred: international contracting experience or exposure to global business environments.
• Preferred: direct engineering-related contracting experience within the nuclear industry.
• Preferred: experience working with U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories and familiarity with their operational frameworks.
• Preferred: technical or subject-matter expertise gained through education or professional experience.
• Ability to work effectively in a role requiring prolonged computer-based work, extended periods of sitting, keyboard use, and focused visual and auditory attention.
• Ability to safely lift up to 25 pounds, with reasonable accommodations available where applicable.
• Ability to travel approximately 0–10%.
