Claims Examiner

Handle low to moderate low exposure claims Confirm claim coverage by reviewing policies and supporting documents Analyze coverage and communicate coverage positions Draft coverage position letters independently Investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and settle assigned claims Obtain, review, and analyze documentation, policy provisions, and other records Conduct, coordinate, and direct investigations into loss facts and extent of damages Evaluate coverage, liability, and damages to determine insured exposure Set reserves within authority or recommend reserve changes to the manager Use the diary system to resolve outstanding issues and ensure timely claim processing and closure Negotiate and settle claims directly with claimants Prepare reports by collecting and summarizing information Participate in special projects and assist team members as requested Provide timely service throughout the claim lifecycle in accordance with service level agreements and company policies Identify subrogation opportunities and fraud potential and make appropriate referrals Provide customer service to internal and external customers Requirements Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license Successful completion of basic insurance courses or achievement of an industry designation (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU) Minimum of two years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Knowledge of insurance industry or claims handling preferred Successful completion of two years as an Associate Claims Specialist preferred Excellent written and oral communication skills Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Strong organization and time management skills Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word) Ability to work in a team environment Strong desire for continuous improvement Ability to travel to industry conferences or meetings, if required US Work Authorization required Markel does not provide visa sponsorship for this position, now or in the future Core Competencies Demonstrates expertise in claims handling, including analyzing coverage, negotiating settlements, and providing exceptional customer service throughout the claim lifecycle.
