Registered Nurse RN

Summary Registered Nurse (RN) functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice. The RN triages patients, obtains histories and vital signs, and assesses patients. Acts independently to initiate immediate care in the absence of a physician in life‑threatening situations. Provides care for acutely and non‑acutely ill patients, performs procedures using both complex and simple nursing skills, assists physicians, provides comfort to patients, families, and visitors, gives discharge and follow‑up instructions, answers ambulance radios, and manages sophisticated equipment in a stressful environment. Responsibilities (Weighting) (25%) Performs nursing assessments, intervenes promptly, and participates in care planning.

  • 25%) Regularly assesses patients’ needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician‑authorized plan of care, and accepted standards of nursing practice.
  • 20%) Processes physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and timely, and follows up on medication changes and order clarifications.
  • 15%) Evaluates effectiveness of the treatment plan and makes suggestions or facilitates changes to improve patient care.
  • 15%) Actively participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information.
Other Duties and Responsibilities Uses physical assessment techniques (auscultation, percussion, palpation, observation) to identify patient problems and their care needs. Possesses clinical competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture, and physical assessment. Reassesses patient health status and identifies significant changes in conditions. Individualizes plan of care. Coordinates prescribed plans with orders from the healthcare team. Communicates pertinent aspects of care to patients, families, or other workers. Initiates home‑health referrals when appropriate. Sets priorities and implements nursing measures that correlate with the identified plan and standard of care. Recognizes changes in patient condition and takes action to manage, reduce, or eliminate symptoms and promote comfort. Demonstrates respect for patient dignity and privacy. Documents nursing intervention and patient response. Maintains a safe patient environment and takes actions to prevent risk situations. Provides patient/family education – explains procedures, uses available educational materials, and documents instructions. Has effective interpersonal skills with customers. Assists peers in patient‑care activities. Recognizes stress in others and uses positive coping techniques. Sets goals and prioritizes emergency department care according to patient acuity. Is accountable in following medical‑center policy and procedure and work attendance. Participates in continuing education program, medical‑center computer‑based learning modules, and ED in‑service training and ED skills day. Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows; may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health. Certifications and Licensures (Core Requirements) ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support, required within 12 months of hire or transfer. BLS – Basic Life Support, required within 3 months of hire or transfer. TNCC – Trauma Nurse Core Course or ATCN, required within 12 months of hire or transfer. PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support, required within 24 months of hire or transfer. RN – Registered Nurse, must have an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and licensure in Michigan. ENPC – Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course, required within 12 months of hire or transfer (one‑time requirement; employees at Saginaw, Tawas, and Standish locations have until January 1 2026). TEAM ADVANCED – Techniques for Effective Aggression Management, required within 6 months of hire or transfer (employees on or before 8 / 1 / 2024 have 24 months to complete). NIMS IS 100 – Incident Command System introduction, required within 6 months of hire or transfer. NIMS IS 700 – National Incident Management System introduction, required within 6 months of hire or transfer. Finger Print – Fingerprinting, required (no specific timing listed). Education Associate’s degree in Nursing required; Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred. Experience, Training and Skills Knowledge of nursing skills as normally acquired through two years’ experience working in a medical‑center or similar setting. Weekend RN positions require a minimum of two years’ experience. Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Must wear personal protective equipment (including latex or substitute). Ability to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform all job functions. Overall vision and hearing necessary (with or without assisted device). Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may need frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; must follow MyMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing requirements. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and remain alert. Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; may involve repetitive movements. Physical demand level: Medium – occasionally (0‑33 %) lift or carry 21 – 50 lbs., frequently (34‑66 %) move 20 lbs., and continuously (67‑100 %) push/pull 10 lbs. #J-18808-Ljbffr MyMichigan Health
