Area Chief of Staff Veterinarian

Area Chief of Staff Pay range: $148,946 - $215,144 annually. This role is also eligible for variable pay based on production. The range reflects a general hiring range for the area; the specific rate is determined by the candidate’s experience, skill level, abilities, and education, and may vary by location and schedule. Summary of Job Purpose and Function The Area Chief of Staff leads, develops, and manages associate veterinarians across their hospitals to ensure Banfield attracts, develops, engages and retains doctors who deliver quality care and meet hospital performance measures. The role drives culture and quality of care within each hospital’s veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) to ensure every pet receives consistent care aligned with Banfield’s six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, equitable. Essential Responsibilities Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, as required by federal, state, or local law. Own the controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention; assess risk, ensure a proactive retention strategy, and cultivate a supportive community where doctors thrive. Provide medical leadership to hospital teams by driving an inclusive, collaborative environment in partnership with practice managers. Validate clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and technicians through medical record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Provide veterinary services; time in clinical role varies by hospital count, direct reports, and hospital performance. Oversee coaching for newly hired veterinarians to ensure they meet Banfield quality standards, Optimum Wellness Plans, processes, and workflows. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent. Act as brand ambassador in the local veterinary community. Deliver excellent hospital experience to student externs, extern program participants, and veterinary candidates during observations. Work with associate doctors to achieve productivity goals through high‑quality medicine, preventive care focus, client experience, and teamwork. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs through hospital leadership and partnership with practice managers. Partner with practice manager to develop, execute, and revise plans achieving targeted KPIs and OGSM performance. Ensure compliance with Banfield clinical essentials, government regulations, and veterinary standards via quality assessments and audits. Meet all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including controlled substance management and radiation safety. Resolve identified gaps with timely plans. Champion preventive care culture, communicating and validating behaviors that drive optimum wellness plan growth and retention. Create a “yes” culture by driving access to care and superior client service, meeting or exceeding client experience scorecard goals. Resolve client complaints related to medical standard of care in an appropriate and timely manner. Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests in partnership with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver the highest level of veterinary care to every pet in a professional, ethical manner while ensuring exceptional client and pet experience. Establish trust and compliance with clients through preventive care, diagnostics, treatment plans, communication, and follow‑up visits. Other duties as assigned. Project timelines may require more than 40 hours per week. Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics, and language ability (reading, writing, speaking English). Must stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds. Good hand‑eye coordination and visual acuity for keyboard use. Moderately high noise level. Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances. Some travel to assist other area hospitals, vendor visits, and associate education. Experience, Education and/or Training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree required. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state veterinary boards. Three years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
