Associate Director of Philanthropy, Institutional & Individual

Overview With a strong mission, a new strategic plan, and vision to increase its work to save lives, complete families, and keep pets with the people who love them, this is an exciting and critical time to join the Seattle Humane Development Team. The 16-person Development team is responsible for raising $12M+ in philanthropic dollars annually. The organization is at a pivotal place in its growth and is investing in its development capacity with a new Associate Director of Philanthropy position focusing on Institutional and Individual Giving. Key Responsibilities Serve as a senior member of the Development team. Work with the Associate Director of Philanthropy-Major Gifts to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan for institutional and individual donors including cultivation, stewardship, and engagement opportunities. Develop an ambitious plan for growing Seattle Humane’s institutional and mid-level supporters, with annual goals and metrics. Serve as Development Leadership liaison with the board in relation to board meetings, the Donor Development Committee, and stewarding board members as key connectors. Lead, mentor, and support a team of two staff, ensuring efforts are coordinated with the Development team’s goals; provide professional development and foster a positive team culture. Track and report on trends/issues relating to grants and mid-level giving programs. Develop revenue goals, manage the expense budget, and track activities monthly. Perform other duties as assigned. Fundraising Manage a portfolio of around 100 Foundation, Corporate, and Individual prospects who have the capacity to make outright and multi-year major investments, with an annual target of $1M; this role is responsible for the research and discovery of new prospects. Develop and implement cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to increase donors’ financial commitment through visits, calls, letters, reports, and donor engagement activities. Ensure communications use compelling language. Engage appropriate program staff, senior leadership, Board, and Committee members in efforts to build the portfolio. Provide program information to donors and prospects and draft personalized correspondence and acknowledgments that demonstrate appreciation and understanding of programs. Responsible for the strategy and growth of grants, building a pipeline of robust and diverse funding; provide guidance and oversight on grant writing and reporting functions. Oversee donor events in collaboration with the Development Director, including events outside regular business hours. Manage information relating to current donors and prospects in the central database with high standards of accuracy and confidentiality. Supervisory Responsibility None. Communication/Interpersonal Contact Daily verbal and written communication with staff and volunteers through direct contact, meetings, telephone, mail, and email. Convey credibility and expertise in advising donors on confidential philanthropic planning matters; initiate contact with new people in person and by phone/email. Represent the organization at events and speaking opportunities as needed (major donor functions, receptions, community events, etc.). Commit to valuing diversity and contribute to an inclusive working environment that is sensitive to other opinions, culture, and perspectives. Complexity High degree of judgment and discretion required. Requires experience working with Board Members and major funders. Preferred experience managing software systems to perform prospect research, donor and data analysis and data mining (e.g., iWave, Instrumental, and Raiser’s Edge). Excellent attention to detail and senior-level experience working with donors and the public. Knowledge/Experience/Education or Training Required: Bachelor’s degree and 6+ years professional fundraising experience including demonstrated success securing 6-7 figure gifts from individuals and foundations. Required: 3+ years as a supervisor of fundraising professionals. Preferred: Experience overseeing annual fund including digital/direct mail campaigns and grant writing. Proficiency in donor database software including Raiser’s Edge, grant research databases, and iWave. Demonstrated leadership in a team-oriented setting. Commitment to Seattle Humane’s mission and quality service. Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and Internet use. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to manage multiple projects with positive outcomes. Experience with Microsoft 365 Suite. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with peers, managers, volunteers, and internal/external partners. Licenses/Certifications Required Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in similar positions. Physical/Mental Requirements With or without reasonable accommodation, analyze complex data, make decisions under time constraints, and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities. Must demonstrate empathy, professionalism, and discretion when dealing with sensitive donor information. May sit for extended periods. Working Conditions Hybrid work model with a combination of on-site and remote work. Open office environment with regular computer and phone use. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required. May have limited animal handling which presents the potential of animal bites, exposure to diseases transmissible from animals to people, animal dander and noise. Equipment: desktop computer, printer, copy machine, multi-line telephone. Work Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week; some evening and/or weekend hours required.
