Fleet Operations Superintendent

The Equipment Bureau of the Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a Fleet Operations Superintendent to join our team to manage Trades Manager/Leader I supervisors. This position will oversee the day-to-day operations across all five shops, working in daily coordination with shop supervisors to maintain workflow and meet customer demands.

The Equipment Bureau maintains all County and Arlington Public Schools’ vehicular equipment across five automotive repair sections: Light Equipment Repairs, School Bus Repairs, Fire & Engineering Equipment Repairs, Heavy Truck Repairs, and Evening Heavy Truck Maintenance.

Responsibilities

Major Job Duties:

• Complete annual performance evaluations and coordinate ongoing training;

• Assess shop operations for productivity and efficiency;

• Develop performance measures and plans to ensure customer expectations are met;

• Manage and monitor the Bureau's operations budget;

• Administer the County's Virginia State Inspection and Northern Virginia Emissions Inspection programs;

• Coordinate services with customers including seasonal demands such as leaf season, snow operations, and spring sweeping;

• Coordinate scheduling of vehicle preventive maintenance and coordinate work between shifts and sections;

• Coordinate services with outside vendors and maintain a safe work environment; and

• Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate possesses the following:

• An automotive industry background paired;
• Proven management experience;
• Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across shop supervisors, customers, and vendors
• Ability to comfortably balance competing priorities across multiple shops; and
• Ability to respond to seasonal and emergency needs.
  
  

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED, or Graduation from Vocational School; and
• Three (3) years of trades work that includes responsibility for providing leadership to other trades workers and/or managing trades projects.

Desirables: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

• Managing heavy automotive shop operations;
• Utilizing an automated vehicle maintenance reporting system;
• Working as a light or heavy automotive mechanic; and
• Managing budgets.

Possession of one or more of the following designations is preferred:

• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL);
• Virginia State Safety Inspector's permit; and
• Northern Virginia Emissions Inspector license

Special Requirements

Background Check : A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Drug and Alcohol Screening: Prior to appointment, successful applicants who hold a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required to successfully complete a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record.

Writing Sample: A writing sample may be required at time of interview.

Work Environmen t: Includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of sitting, bending, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment, weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee in this position performs duties in all weather-related situations.

Additional Information

Work hours: Monday through Friday, between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. This position is classified as essential. Selected candidate must be available for callback in emergency situations, including during snow removal season. Work is performed as part of a 24/7 operation.
