Job Title: Plant Operator I
Job Description
This role operates and maintains sludge, dewatering, treatment, processing, disposal, and testing equipment in an industrial refinery facility to purify water and meet strict customer specifications. You will work primarily with wastewater and water treatment systems, ensuring equipment runs safely and efficiently while meeting processing and quality targets. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor sludge, dewatering, treatment, processing, disposal, and testing equipment to ensure water quality meets customer specifications.
- Independently operate assigned machines and equipment while consistently meeting or exceeding processing and quality targets.
- Operate equipment such as pumps, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed systems, odor control systems, sludge processing filters, and related measuring and control devices.
- Use testing equipment to monitor process performance and adjust operations as needed.
- Handle and operate material handling equipment safely to support plant operations.
- Perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment, including hoses, pumps, valves, gates, mixers, blowers, and feeders.
- Use computer programs and process control systems to monitor, adjust, and document plant operations.
- Follow operational, process, safety, and quality instructions accurately, including written procedures and work instructions.
- Work collaboratively in a team environment, supporting colleagues and assisting with tasks as needed.
- Willingly assume additional or new responsibilities as operational needs change.
- Perform basic mathematical calculations to support process control and measurement activities.
- Participate in rotational 24-hour emergency on-call coverage if required.
- Lift and move materials and equipment up to 50 pounds on a repeated basis as part of daily duties.
- Adhere to all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements while working in an industrial facility.
- Complete routine checks and inspections of treatment systems and equipment, including periodic weekend checks when required.
Essential Skills
- Experience in an industrial or municipal facility operating or repairing equipment such as hoses, pumps, valves, gates, mixers, blowers, and feeders.
- Ability to operate and learn equipment including pumps, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed systems, odor control systems, sludge processing filters, and measuring/control devices.
- OSHA 10 certification.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds on a repeated basis.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Some experience in a related position and environment (industrial, municipal, or similar) preferred.
- Working ability to use computer programs for process control.
- Ability to use Windows- and Mac-based computer programs for email and training.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend English for operational, process, safety, and quality instructions.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
- Ability to serve in a rotational 24-hour emergency on-call schedule if required.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience with maintenance repair, mechanical, electrical, general labor, and equipment operation.
- Experience or familiarity with wastewater treatment, water treatment, and related maintenance activities.

Work Environment
This role is based at an aluminum plant in Oswego, NY, where the organization owns and operates on-site treatment facilities. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with occasional rotational 24-hour on-call responsibilities if required. Once hired directly, you may be asked to obtain a CDL to operate tankers as part of plant operations. When working directly, you will perform brief routine checks at the facility every other weekend, typically about one hour on Saturday and Sunday, compensated as three hours of overtime work. The environment is industrial and refinery-based, involving wastewater and water treatment processes, mechanical and electrical equipment, and computer-based process control systems. You will use Windows- and Mac-based computers for email, training, and monitoring, and work around pumps, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed systems, odor control systems, sludge processing filters, and other material handling equipment, following all safety and operational procedures.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
