Leader - Surgical Reprocessing TechnicianAccountability for leading, managing, developing, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of the Materials Management Department. Ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Assists in interviewing, hiring, training, evaluation, and disciplining of personnel in the department. Manages and collaborates with leadership members and physicians for the care of responsible equipment and disposables. Facilitates empowerment of staff in the implementation of creative and innovative materials and delivery models. Stimulates a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach in the continuous improvement of patient care services. Supervises the methods used to clean, inspect, assemble, and package all surgical products. Supports physicians and nurses in inpatient and outpatient departments, Operating Room, Emergency Room, and Delivery Room. Supplies the needs of the Operating Suites and Delivery Rooms by maintaining a par inventory. Assembles procedure-specific case carts. Prepares instrument trays and individual items for use in the operating room without supervision. Documents and monitors steam and gas sterilizers and aerators. Prepares, mechanically, and manually decontaminates all surgical instrumentation. Supervises, counts, disinfects, and assembles surgical trays and related supplies. Inspects, folds, assembles, and wraps all surgical supplies and equipment. Assembles case carts and cleans and inspects surgical instruments for damage, workability, cleanliness, and completeness. Supervises receiving and storing unsterile and sterile supplies. Distributes supplies to appropriate Operating Rooms while maintaining par inventories. Monitors dated sterile supplies and medications to remove outdated items for reprocessing or disposal. Responsible for filling requisitions and running requests to various departments. Cleans and inspects pressure transducers for damage, cleanliness, and completeness. Takes inventories of all components of reprocessing trays to find missing surgical instruments. Performs inventories using the par level method to determine user needs and revise par levels. Responsible for scheduling materials area staff. Has knowledge and skill to prepare items for sterilization by double wrapping or placing in heat-sealed pouches. Completes necessary sterilization records and monitors sterilizers for proper function. Returns sterile items to ready shelves and checks shelves for outdated items requiring re-sterilization. Transfers instrument trays and basins from the washer/sterilizer conveyer to the next staging area. Sorts and reassembles all instrument trays and single packaged items. Inspects instruments and removes all damaged instruments for repair, replacing all missing components as needed. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Participates in quality management teams. Performs all other related duties as required. Participates in gathering and utilizing appropriate data to monitor operations and makes recommendations for improvement. Completes department and hospital orientation processes successfully. Maintains competence during the evaluation year, including departmental standards and continuing education. Completes mandatory competencies related to Infection Control and Patient Safety. Supports and mentors new staff while identifying ongoing educational needs. Completes ongoing leadership development opportunities both within and outside the organization. Participates in community activities and/or professional organizations. Promotes an atmosphere of care, concern, pride, and respect to internal and external customers. Maintains awareness of personal actions and their impact on the image of the department. Assists management with the development and implementation of operational and capital budgets. Maintains awareness and responsibility for divisional budgets and resource allocations. Facilitates cost-effective initiatives as needed. Possesses customer service skills, sterilization processes knowledge, interpersonal skills, sterile supply management principles, and computer skills. High School Diploma is required. Completion of a medical terminology course is helpful. Central Service Certification and one year of experience in a Central Service environment are preferred. Must be able to work in harmony with others under stressful conditions. Physical demands include extensive walking and standing. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds and push loaded heavy carts. May be exposed to noisy equipment, chemicals.
