Position Summary
The HR Generalist supports a broad range of Human Resources functions, including recruiting, leave and workers compensation administration, safety compliance, and employee recognition. This role serves as a key point of contact for team members, provides front desk backup, and supports payroll and benefits processing as needed. This role requires sound judgment and prior HR exposure, given the compliance-sensitive nature of the leave, workers compensation, and safety duties involved.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports recruiting efforts by posting job openings on the company website, SC Works, and other external platforms.
- Schedules and participates in interviews and conducts exit interviews.
- Manages pre-employment processes, including reference checks, background screenings, and drug testing when applicable.
- Administers FMLA and medical leave procedures, ensuring accurate documentation and timely communication.
- Assists with the workers' compensation process, including documentation, communication, and follow-up.
- Conducts routine safety inspections and maintains inventory of safety equipment.
- Facilitates safety orientation for new hires and ensures compliance with company safety standards.
- Coordinates service awards, employee appreciation initiatives, and annual holiday recognition programs, including gift card distribution.
- Monitors and manages the careers email inbox, responding to applicant and employee inquiries.
- Serves as front desk backup and provides general clerical support, including filing, scanning, and document preparation.
- Addresses team member concerns during office hours and escalates issues when appropriate.
- Serves as backup to the Payroll and Benefits Specialist for payroll and benefits administration.
- Assists with new hire orientation alongside the Payroll and Benefits Specialist.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Equipment/Tools Used
Computer, telephone, printer/scanner, copier, and general office equipment. May use a company vehicle or golf cart when conducting safety inspections across the property.
Reporting Relationships
Reports directly to the Chief Personnel Officer.
Working Conditions
Primarily works in a standard office environment. Occasionally walks throughout campus and facilities to conduct safety inspections, which may involve brief exposure to outdoor weather conditions and varying temperatures.
Physical Demands
- (E) Frequently sits and uses hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment.
- (E) Frequently talks and hears in order to communicate with team members, applicants, and vendors.
- (E) Frequently views and reads information on a computer screen and printed documents.
- Occasionally walks and stands while conducting safety inspections or assisting at the front desk.
- Occasionally moves or transports files, records, or safety supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
- Requires excellent typing, filing, scanning, and organizational skills.
- Must be able to learn and understand new processes.
- Requires ability to utilize and understand computer systems, word processors, and spreadsheets (Microsoft Office).
- Must have the ability to handle confidential information.
- Requires good communication skills to deal with all levels of management and personnel.
- Requires ability to handle a variety of job duties and exercise sound judgment on matters involving leave, workers compensation, and safety compliance.
Requirements
- Work Experience: One or more years in an HR-adjacent, clerical, or office setting; prior exposure to leave administration, workers compensation, or recruiting support preferred given the compliance-sensitive nature of this role.
