Executive Medical Director, Global Medical (Nephrology)

General Summary The Executive Medical Director, Global Medical Lead (GML), Nephrology is a critical leadership role in Global Medical, responsible for the global medical strategy and implementation and tracking of global activities for a designated disease area(s). The leader reports directly to the VP, Global Medical and is a core member of the Global Medical leadership team. Key Duties and Responsibilities Medical Strategy Lead the development, implementation, execution, and communication of Integrated Medical Plans, including medical strategy, global tactical plan, publication, congress, and evidence generation plans. Ensure alignment of medical strategy with organizational objectives and cross‑functional partners. Distill insights and actionable outcomes to inform strategy. Establish and track medical KPIs that demonstrate impact on asset strategy and patient outcomes. Manage the global DA budget and resource allocation. Scientific Excellence Serve as product and disease‑area expert and global contact point for all disease‑area related issues. Lead development of peer‑reviewed publications, congress presentations and evidence generation. Develop global scientific communications and materials. Accountable for medical review of assigned brand‑related content and global medical content aligned with Vertex SOPs. External Partnerships Represent Vertex at scientific and medical forums, including medical education forums, societies, patient advocacy groups, and congresses. Engage and cultivate professional relationships with leading global key thought leaders. Medical Communication Tailor communication to stakeholder needs, building trust across audiences. Deliver external presentations to enhance knowledge of pipeline and marketed products. Support disease‑area training across the company. Interpret data for pipeline therapies and marketed medicines. Regional Medical and Cross‑Functional Collaboration Responsible for the medical component of the go‑to‑market model. Support regional Medical Affairs and Medical Excellence teams from launch through lifecycle. Drive alignment on medical content/messaging within the organization. Represent and communicate DST priorities to the medical function. Chair the Global Medical Area Team (GMAT) for the disease area. Represent Medical Affairs in label discussions and support Access, Patient Advocacy, Policy, and Corporate Communications teams. Evidence Generation and Access Accountable for strategy, development, and execution of Life Cycle Management studies in partnership with HEOR. Act as medical monitor for studies under the Medical Affairs scope. Lead oversight of ISS programs and conduct scientific and medical review of ISS protocols. Lead Managed Access Committee for assets with a Managed Access Program (MAP). Team Management Provide strong leadership to the dedicated disease‑area medical team. Recruit, develop, manage, and coach the DA global medical team. Leverage team expertise to ensure successful execution of medical plans. Identify and address skill gaps and enable talent development. Compliance and Pharmacovigilance Ensure compliance of medical activities according to global and regional guidelines and Vertex policies and SOPs. Ensure reporting of adverse events as required. Contribute to managing external communication when significant safety issues arise. Education and Experience MD (preferred), PhD, PharmD or other advanced life sciences degree required. Typically requires 10years of experience and 5 years of supervisory/management experience or equivalent. 6or more years of relevant leadership experience in medical affairs and/or clinical development, including experience in both Global and Country/Region. 2or more years of industry experience in disease area or 2or more years of clinical/academic experience in disease area. Compensation Pay Range: $328,000–$492,000. The role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards, with possible overtime pay. Benefits include medical, dental and vision, generous paid time off, educational assistance, commuting subsidy, charitable donation matching, 401(k), and more. Flex Designation Hybrid‑Eligible or On‑Site Eligible. Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; On‑Site: work five days per week on‑site with ad hoc flexibility.
