JOB DESCRIPTION: PROGRAM NURSE

Qualifications : Minimum Education: Graduate of accredited School of Nursing. Licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Indiana.

Level of Experience: Previous experience as a registered nurse.

Preferred: at least one year of previous pediatric nursing experience, public health nursing, community health nursing, school nurse experience or one year inpatient nursing experience.

Additional Requirements: Certification in BLS for Health care provider.

Supervision Received: Program Administrator, District Nurse Coordinator


Supervision Exercised: Unlicensed staff members that have been trained on student specific delegated medical procedures.

Knowledge and Skills:


Demonstrate knowledge of school nursing specialty and nursing care of pediatric population.


Demonstrate good organizational skills and ability to set priorities.


Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.


Demonstrate professional maturity. Have knowledge of computers and network computer applications including proficiency in the use of electronic medical records.


Demonstrate the ability to set priorities for self. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and make sound judgments with minimal supervision.


Positions Summary:

Provide preventative, maintenance, screening and acute health services to assist the student in obtaining optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development in the school setting.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Comply with all applicable policies and procedures for the Westfield Washington School District, including, but not limited to all departmental and functional policies and procedures, maintaining acceptable attendance, records, arriving for duty punctually and following dress code.


• Must be knowledgeable of and demonstrate skills in the principles of infection prevention, reduction and controls appropriate for the school setting.


• Identities problems and disabilities for the student collaborate with the parent/health care provider, assess the students' medical needs and create an individualized health care plan when appropriate.


• Functions within the legal boundaries of registered nurse practice for Indiana based on the knowledge of statues and rules governing nursing.


• Administers prescribed interventions ordered by a physician with unlimited license to practice osteopathic medicine; licensed dentist, chiropractor, optometrist or podiatrist when qualified and appropriate in the school setting.


• Documents tolerance of treatments, procedures, and other inventions performed in the student's medical record.


• Reports any adverse events or abnormal health findings to parents as needed.


• Works to ensure that patient rights are identified and met.


• Notifies the appropriate party (i.e. supervisor, principal, corporation administrator, consumer protection division) of any unprofessional conduct which may jeopardize the student's safety.


• Is knowledgeable of FERPA/HIPAA rules and regulations as applies to school nursing.


• Collects data for the accurate and ongoing assessment of student related to physical, psychological, social, and educational and safety.


• Collaborates and demonstrates professional demeanor, compassion, good interpersonal skills and a positive attitude toward students, families, school personnel, co-workers and community personnel.


• Seek educational resources and creates learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skill for continued competence in nursing practice and individual professional growth.


• Attends or participates in continued education classes when required.


• Communicates, collaborates and functions with other members of the school health care team to provide safe and effective care.


• Respect the dignity and rights of the student regardless of socioeconomic status, personal attributes or nature of the health problems.


• Maintains each student's right to privacy by protecting confidential information unless obligated by law, to disclose the information.


• Provides nursing care without discrimination on the basis of diagnosis, age, sex, race, creed or color.


• Other duties as assigned.


Exposure Risk: This position has the potential for blood and body fluid exposure. Appropriate personal protective devices will be made available.
