Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced remote centeredenvironment with variety in your work? The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic Attorney IV to independently performs the more complex and sensitive legal services with broad discretion.

Under general direction of the Policy Regulation & Approval Bureau (PRAB) Assistant Chief Counsel, the Attorney IV is considered a legal expert with a high level of experience and specialization in insurance law; provides formal, informal, oral, and written legal advice to the Assistant Chief Counsel, Deputy Commissioner and other CDI personnel on a variety of issues pertaining to federal and state insurance law. The incumbent reviews and analyzes complex insurance policy forms, health insurance company reporting, and related documents for compliance with statutory and regulatory standards; interprets complex legislation, statutes, and regulations pertaining to these various types of insurance policies; responds to inquiries from the public, insurance industry, legislators and other California Department of Insurance (CDI) personnel; completes special project/assignments, and makes recommendations to the Assistant Chief Counsel. In addition, the incumbent assists the Assistant Chief Counsel in matters that require review and interpretation of policy filings considering past Department practices, law, and experience and maintaining subject matter guides.

This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code. The position is responsible for making or participating in governmental decisions that may potentially have a material effect on personal financial interests. The appointee is required to complete a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700), which includes an Assuming Office filing within 30 days of appointment, annual filings, and a Leaving Office filing within 30 days of physical separation. Non-compliance with the Conflict of Interest Code requirements may result in the voiding of appointment, financial penalties, or enforcement actions.

Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025 and related Pay Differential 386. PLP 2025 requires employees to receive a reduction in pay in exchange for monthly hours of PLP 2025 leave credits. Working Conditions

  • Work in a high-rise office building
  • Eligible for telework in accordance with CDIs Telework policy. Teleworking employees may be required to report to their headquarters office location on designated telework days. Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.
  • Lift, carry or otherwise transport laptop computer and documents to court, meetings, conferences, and other appearances.
  • Occasional travel is required within and/or outside the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). An Attorney IV may act in a lead capacity on a team with more junior attorneys and legal analysts. Travel may include overnight stay.

The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of your ability to present information clearly and concisely. It should be typed in 12-Point, single spaced, Arial font and be no more than three pages in length.
