Schedule: Flexible, with the ability to meet agreed-upon project timelines and communicate with our team during normal business hours when needed

Compensation: DOE (Depending on Experience), based on agreed-upon project scopes, hourly rates, retainers, or other subcontract arrangements.

Your role

Ellislaine is seeking a Website Designer Subcontractor to support the development, design, and enhancement of client websites, primarily on the Squarespace platform, while also utilizing and building on emerging AI-powered platforms and tools to create more customized, efficient, and innovative web experiences.

We’re looking for a reliable, creative, and tech-savvy subcontractor who can take a project or assigned scope and run with it—from translating an established brand into a polished website to making updates, building new pages, troubleshooting issues, and helping us find smarter ways to get great work done.

Our ideal partner is comfortable working independently, communicates clearly, meets deadlines, and consistently delivers polished work.

Work will be assigned on a project or ongoing subcontract basis depending on experience, availability, and our current project pipeline.

What You’ll Do

• Website design and development: Create, launch, update, and enhance client websites, primarily in Squarespace. Build responsive, visually compelling websites that align with each client's brand, goals, and overall marketing strategy.
• Code implementation as needed: Implement CSS/HTML adjustments when needed, build page layouts, integrate forms and functionality, and ensure websites perform well across desktop and mobile devices.
• AI-assisted website creation: Use AI and emerging development tools to improve website workflows, troubleshoot problems, develop custom functionality, accelerate production, and explore creative solutions.
• AI experience: Utilize tools such as Claude Code, Lovable, or similar AI-assisted coding, design, and website-building platforms is highly valued. We’re less concerned with knowing one specific tool and more interested in someone who is comfortable learning and using new technology.
• Website maintenance and optimization: Make ongoing website updates, add and revise content, adjust layouts, troubleshoot issues, optimize images, perform basic on-page SEO, and ensure websites remain accurate and functional.
• Design and digital assets: Create or adapt supporting visual assets for websites, including graphics, icons, imagery, page elements, and other digital assets.
• Graphic design experience is a major bonus: Depending on your skill set, there may also be opportunities to assist with branding, social graphics, digital advertising assets, print collateral, presentations, and other creative projects.
• User experience: Translate client goals and brand strategy into intuitive website structures and user experiences. Think beyond how a website looks to consider how visitors navigate, interact, and ultimately take action.
• Content and asset management: Organize and optimize website imagery, brand files, graphics, and other digital assets. Create website mockups or visual concepts when needed for internal or client review.
• Quality assurance: Test website functionality, responsiveness, links, forms, layouts, and user experience across devices. Troubleshoot issues and ensure projects are polished before launch.
• Collaboration: Work closely with Ellislaine's internal creative and marketing team. Communicate project status clearly, respond to feedback, and manage assigned work within established scopes and timelines.
