Police Officer I/II
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Division of Finance and Administrative Affairs is currently seeking to fill three Police Officer positions for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Police Department. These positions may be filled as either a Police Officer I or Police Officer II, based on the successful candidates' qualifications.
Police Officers serve as law enforcement officers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. These positions function with full arrest powers under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant. Many investigations and duty assignments are conducted independently. Responsibilities are generally complex and demanding and require the skills, abilities, and training (provided).
Police Officers will be expected to become thoroughly familiar with the Police Department policies, procedures, rules, regulations and memoranda, as well as the University Staff Code of Conduct. The principal duties of a University Police Officer are to provide for the personal safety of all persons on campus, ensure a peaceful environment in which the academic pursuits of the University can be realized, prevent and identify criminal activity, and to apprehend those involved in such activity. Many additional services are also provided to students, faculty, staff, and members of the greater community.
Working Conditions:
- 12-hour shift schedule. Police Officers are generally assigned to work 14 days per month.
- Regular schedule includes every other weekend off (Fri, Sat, Sun).
- Uniforms and equipment are provided by UWM.

Key Job Responsibilities:
- Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
- Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
- Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
- Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
- Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community

Compensation:
For Lateral Transfer applicants who are selected for employment from another law enforcement agency as a full-time sworn officer, we will match completed continuous, full-time years of service and apply to the pay grid below as the starting wage up to year 3.
Base rates listed below do not include overtime pay.
There are many opportunities for overtime throughout the year, paid at time and a half.

Year 2 | $41.83 (equivalent to $87,006 per year)
Year 3 (POII) | $46.30 (equivalent to $96,304 per year)

Required Qualifications:
- An applicant for employment as a law enforcement or tribal law enforcement officer shall possess either a 2-year associate degree from a Wisconsin technical college system district or its accredited equivalent from another state or a minimum of 60 fully accredited college level credits. An applicant who has not met this standard at the time of employment shall meet this standard as a requirement of recertification by the board at the end of his or her fifth year of employment as a law enforcement officer; AND
- Possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's license or other such valid operator's permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in Wisconsin; AND
- Have no unpardoned convictions for a felony, or any offense that could be punished as a felony in Wisconsin; AND
- Have no convictions of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence as defined in 18 USC 921(a)(33), convictions of domestic abuse as defined in 968.075(1)(a), Wis. Stats., or convictions of a crime subject to the imposition of the domestic abuse surcharge under 973.055(4), Wis. Stats.; Per 66.0501(2); AND
- Be of good character; and be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the performance of the duties of a law enforcement officer.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Have completed (within 3 years) or be currently enrolled and will complete, a Wisconsin Department of Justice "Law Enforcement Recruit" training course and be eligible for certification upon employment by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) as a Law Enforcement Officer;
- Be a certified Law Enforcement Officer in another state and be eligible for certification by Wisconsin LESB;
- Hold or have held military veteran status in a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) as a law enforcement officer (Military Police/Security Forces/Master of Arms), full-time for a minimum of one (1) year beyond basic training, fully empowered and paid for all hours worked, and left law enforcement officer employment voluntarily with a good record and been out of that employment for less than three (3) years.
- Have a current appointment within the Universities of Wisconsin in any employment classification.
