Enjoy Reading? Become a Tutor to an Adult Learner

If you can spare two hours a week, you can make a positive difference in the life of another adult through tutoring! Oakland Literacy Council in suburban Detroit is looking for compassionate volunteers who are at least 18 years old to tutor adults preparing for the GED high-school-equivalency exam. Our tutors: meet their student for two hours a week for a year (with time off for vacations and holidays) set their own schedule meet their student at a public location like a library can use our curriculum. Our tutors provide help with reading skills necessary to pass the non-math portions of the GED exam. This might include learning academic vocabulary, improving reading fluency, and building critical thinking skills when reading Social Studies, Science, and other non-fiction texts. This is a rewarding volunteer opportunity where you see the impact of your work directly in your student’s life! No previous tutoring experience is required. Six hours of training and curriculum are provided. This is a perfect opportunity for retirees, empty-nesters, college students and those taking a gap year.
