Job Description
Reporting to the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, under general supervision, the Equipment Mechanic performs journey-level skilled mechanical tasks to include diagnosing malfunctions, performing preventative maintenance and required repairs, and performing an overhaul of City owned diesel and gasoline-powered cars, trucks, and light and heavy equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
These duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Repairs defective vehicles and equipment including diesel, gasoline, and electric powered automobiles, pickups, septic trucks, street sweepers, vacuum trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, commercial mowers/implements, and other miscellaneous equipment.
- Performs brake system diagnosis and overhaul. Repairs complex electrical systems including alternators, starters, lighting, and complex electrical circuits. Repairs and/or replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive shafts, differentials, and lubrication, cooling, heating and air conditioning, exhaust, hydraulic/air, anti-lock brake systems, radio systems and other types of communication equipment.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance such as changing oil and filters, servicing transmissions, lubricating chassis and making required adjustments, and inspecting vehicles and equipment for signs of wear and potential future malfunctions.
- Completes maintenance and repairs for police pursuit rated vehicles, police emergency lighting systems and related electrical systems.
- Performs a diagnosis of vehicle and equipment problems, using scan tool or laptop computer to diagnose and repair fault codes or drivability issues in both gasoline and diesel engines.
- Performs diagnosis of electronic systems such as fuel injection, diesel exhaust fluid systems, tire pressure monitor systems, supplemental restraints, anti-lock brakes, and makes necessary repairs.
- Drives or operates vehicles, heavy trucks, and equipment to determine necessary repairs and to evaluate results of repair work performed.
- Welds broken parts and designs and fabricates new parts as required.
- Orders parts by computer, telephone, or by visiting parts stores and vendors.
- Generates work orders, tracks time, and materials used during repairs in a fleet management software system.
- Repairs and changes damaged or worn tires including heavy duty truck tires/wheels.
Other duties as assigned
- Assists other mechanics as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Completion of an approved apprenticeship program or community college program in automotive or diesel mechanics AND one (1) year of journey-level experience performing skilled mechanical repairs on a variety of vehicles and construction equipment.
OR
A High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND three (3) years of journey-level experience performing skilled mechanical repairs on a variety of vehicles and construction equipment.
*May have a combination of experience, education, and training that would substitute for the level of knowledge and ability required.
Special Requirements or License(s):
- Must pass a thorough background investigation and a pre-employment physical, including drug testing, to determine the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodation.
- Must complete CJIS system training and provide fingerprints to database for unescorted access to police station
- Must be attentive to job safety considerations and follows all required safety policies, procedures, and techniques.
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license at time of hire OR must obtain within 30 days from date of hire, and must have a driving record acceptable to the City and the City's insurance carrier.
- Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
- Must have or have ability to obtain an industrial first aid/CPR certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Must have or have ability to obtain a forklift operator's license within twelve (12) months of hire.
- Must have or ability to obtain a commercial driver license endorsement Class B, with air brake and tank endorsement, within twelve (12) months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of journey-level automotive and equipment mechanics, and motor vehicle equipment laws.
- Computer programs and diagnostic equipment for electrical and engine repairs.
- Methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, including computerized testing equipment.
- Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Diagnosis and repair of modern heavy-duty diesel trucks, engines and equipment.
- Electronically controlled computer systems for diesel engines.
- Diesel exhaust emission systems including diesel exhaust fluid systems.
- Air brake systems, to include ABS disc and drum.
- General understanding of hydraulic systems.
- Industrial first aid practices and pertinent safety regulations, standards, and guidelines for automotive repair.
- Related computer programs and software for record keeping and report preparation.
Skill in:
- Reading, interpreting, and applying information from paper and electronic technical repair manuals.
- Utilizing personal computer software programs and other relevant software affecting assigned work and in compiling and preparing spreadsheets.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, management, vendors, outside agencies, community groups and the general public.

- Operate arc, tig, mig welders, oxygen and acetylene equipment, and a plasma cutter.
- Operate general shop equipment such as vehicle lifts, grinders, brake lathe, drills, tire machine, wheel balancer, pullers, jacks, air tools, and various hand tools and other equipment used in automotive repair.
- Operate a computer and the software appropriate for the position such as a record keeping database and other diagnostic equipment.
- Maintain physical ability and dexterity necessary to maintain and repair a diverse fleet.
- Maintain reasonable, predictable, and regular attendance during scheduled work hours.
Working Conditions
Work Environment:
- Typical assignments are performed in the shop which may be dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped; repairs are made in the field when necessary.
- Fieldwork is performed during all types of weather and may be at a work site with other hazards.
- Duties may require contact with corrosive solvents and cleaning solutions, hazardous substances such as battery acid, and the inhalation of exhaust.
- Occasional work that requires exposure to untreated sewage residue on equipment.
- Exposure to occasional loud noises from equipment.
- Driving a City vehicle to travel from site-to-site.
- Constant interruptions.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Occasional overtime work and after-hours call-backs.
- Makes emergency service calls when necessary.
